{"id":5532,"date":"2017-10-16T17:23:19","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T11:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=5532"},"modified":"2019-05-12T02:52:08","modified_gmt":"2019-05-12T02:52:08","slug":"fix-windows-cant-setup-homegroup-computer-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-windows-cant-setup-homegroup-computer-error\/","title":{"rendered":"Fix &#8220;Windows can&#8217;t set up a Homegroup on this computer&#8221; Error"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you attempt to join a computer to a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-in\/help\/17145\/windows-homegroup-from-start-to-finish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HomeGroup<\/a> or create a HomeGroup from your Windows 10 computer, the following error message appears and the feature can&#8217;t be enabled.<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">Windows can&#8217;t set up a HomeGroup on this computer<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5533\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/homegroup-cannot-setup-error.png\" alt=\"cannot setup homegroup error\" width=\"614\" height=\"485\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And running the HomeGroup troubleshooter (by clicking the link in the above dialog) may prove futile; it may say &#8220;No issues detected&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5541\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/homegroup-troubleshooter.png\" alt=\"homegroup troubleshooter\" width=\"571\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, in systems which have been upgraded to Windows 10, the previously established HomeGroup may not be detected, thus showing this error:<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">Windows no longer detects on this network. To create a new homegroup, click OK, and then open HomeGroup in Control Panel.<\/div>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>If the troubleshooter is unable to identify the problem, here are your manual troubleshooting steps:<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Inspect the Services Configuration<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, click Run.<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>Services.msc<\/code> and press ENTER<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that the following services are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-default-services-configuration\/\">configured correctly<\/a><\/li>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Service name<\/th>\n<th>Start type<\/th>\n<th>Log On As<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Function Discovery Provider Host<\/td>\n<td>Manual<\/td>\n<td>LOCAL SERVICE<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Function Discovery Resource Publication<\/td>\n<td>Manual<\/td>\n<td>LOCAL SERVICE<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>HomeGroup Listener<\/td>\n<td>Manual<\/td>\n<td>LOCAL SYSTEM<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>HomeGroup Provider<\/td>\n<td>Manual \u2013 Triggered<\/td>\n<td>LOCAL SERVICE<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Network List Service<\/td>\n<td>Manual<\/td>\n<td>LOCAL SERVICE<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Peer Name Resolution Protocol<\/td>\n<td>Manual<\/td>\n<td>LOCAL SERVICE<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Peer Networking Grouping<\/td>\n<td>Manual<\/td>\n<td>LOCAL SERVICE<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>Peer Networking Identity Manager<\/td>\n<td>Manual<\/td>\n<td>LOCAL SERVICE<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<li><strong>Start<\/strong> the <code>Peer Name Resolution Protocol<\/code> service manually.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>See article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-default-services-configuration\/\">Windows 10 Default Services Configuration<\/a> for the entire list of Windows 10 services.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Peer Name Resolution Protocol reports error 0x80630203 when starting?<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/error.png\" alt=\"error symbol\" width=\"128\" height=\"128\" \/>All of the above services need to run in order for the HomeGroup feature to work correctly. In a <strong>vast majority of the cases<\/strong>, the HomeGroup problem is caused by the <code><strong>Peer Name Resolution Protocol<\/strong><\/code> service. The following error may appear when you attempt to start the service by clicking the Start button in Service properties dialog:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/homegroup-peer-name-service-error.png\" alt=\"peer name resolution error 0x80630203\" width=\"407\" height=\"172\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">\n<p>Windows could not start the Peer Name Resolution Protocol service on Local Computer.<\/p>\n<p>Error 0x80630203: Unable to access a key.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Because Peer Name Resolution Protocol service failed to start, the Peer Networking Grouping service fails as well, as it&#8217;s dependent on the former service.<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">\n<p>The Peer Networking Grouping service depends on the Peer Name Resolution Protocol service which failed to start because of the following error:<\/p>\n<p>The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><code>Peer Networking Grouping<\/code> and <code>PNRP Machine Name Publication Service<\/code> services would report <code>Error 1068<\/code>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">\n<p>Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Step 2: Fix the &#8220;Peer Name Resolution Protocol&#8221; Service<\/h3>\n<p>The Peer Name Resolution Protocol service is unable to start due to missing permission entry for <code>LOCAL SERVICE<\/code> account for the <code>RSA\\MachineKeys<\/code> folder. Follow these steps to resolve the problem.<\/p>\n<p>1. Open File Explorer and browse this folder:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\Crypto\\RSA<\/pre>\n<p>2. Right-click the <code>MachineKeys<\/code> folder, click Properties, and click the Security tab.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/homegroup-machinekeys-permissions.png\" alt=\"machinekeys folder permissions security tab\" width=\"700\" height=\"577\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. Click the Edit button.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5536\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/homegroup-machinekeys-permissions2.png\" alt=\"machinekeys folder permissions security tab 2\" width=\"363\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. If <code>LOCAL SERVICE<\/code> is not already listed there, then click the Add button.<\/p>\n<p>5. In the <strong>Select User or Group<\/strong> dialog box, type <code>LOCAL SERVICE<\/code> and click OK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5538\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/homegroup-machinekeys-permissions4.png\" alt=\"machinekeys folder permissions select users permissions\" width=\"457\" height=\"251\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. With <code>LOCAL SERVICE<\/code> entry selected, enable the Full Control &#8211; Allow checkbox.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/homegroup-machinekeys-permissions3.png\" alt=\"machinekeys folder permissions security tab 3\" width=\"363\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>7. Click OK.<\/p>\n<p>8. Start the Peer Name Resolution Protocol service manually. If it starts successfully, HomeGroup will start functioning correctly. In that case, skip the following steps (9 to 15).<\/p>\n<h3>Peer Name Resolution Protocol service start error 1079?<\/h3>\n<p>9. If Peer Name Resolution Protocol service throws the following error:<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">Error 1079: the account specified for this service is different from the account specified for other services running in the same process.<\/div>\n<p>.. then open Services MMC [<code>services.msc<\/code>]<\/p>\n<p>10. Double-click <code>Peer Name Resolution Protocol<\/code><\/p>\n<p>11. Click the Log On tab, and make sure it&#8217;s set to start as <code>LOCAL SERVICE<\/code> instead of <code>Local System Account<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/homegroup-peer-name-logon-account.png\" alt=\"peer name resolution service logon 1079 error\" width=\"406\" height=\"468\" \/><\/p>\n<p>12. If it&#8217;s currently set as <code>Local System Account<\/code>, then click <strong>This account<\/strong> radio button, and click Browse<\/p>\n<p>13. Type <code>LOCAL SERVICE<\/code> and click OK. Click OK again to close the dialog.<\/p>\n<p>14. Exit the Services console.<\/p>\n<p>15. Although restarting the computer isn&#8217;t required, please do restart the system anyway, just to be sure changes are applied without any problems.<\/p>\n<p>See if you can join a HomeGroup or create a HomeGroup now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/homegroup-joined.png\" alt=\"joined to homegroup successfully\" width=\"614\" height=\"485\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you attempt to join a computer to a HomeGroup or create a HomeGroup from your Windows 10 computer, the following error message appears and the feature can&#8217;t be enabled.
