Another app is controlling your sound at the moment. To listen here, close that app and try again. Error 0xc101009b (0xc00d4e85)<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This problem happens if a current application is exclusively using your audio device. Here is how to fix such problems. Proceed to next step if one doesn&#8217;t fix the problem.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 1: Stop and Restart the Audio Service<\/h2>\n<p>1. Right-click Start, click Run.<\/p>\n<p>2. Type <code>Services.msc<\/code> and press ENTER<\/p>\n<p>3. Right-click Windows Audio and click Restart<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/w10-audio-svc-restart.png\" alt=\"restart windows audio service\" width=\"650\" height=\"389\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5478\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. Close the Services console<\/p>\n<h2>Step 2: Disable and re-enable the audio device<\/h2>\n<p>1. Right-click Start, click Device Manager.<\/p>\n<p>2. Expand &#8220;Sound, video and game controllers&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>3. Right-click on the audio hardware, and click <strong>Disable device<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/w10-audio-hardware-devmgr.png\" alt=\"disable and enable audio hardware device manager\" width=\"650\" height=\"362\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5477\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. Click Yes when you see this prompt:<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">Disabling this device will cause it to stop functioning. Do you really want to disable it?<\/div>\n<p>5. Right-click on the audio hardware, and click &#8220;Enable device&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Step 3: Prevent apps from exclusively using the audio device<\/h2>\n<p>1. Right Click on the speaker icon in the taskbar.<\/p>\n<p>2. Click on Playback devices.<\/p>\n<p>3. Right-click on the playback device from the list of devices, and select Properties.<\/p>\n<p>4. Select the Advanced tab.<\/p>\n<p>5. Remove the check from the box next to &#8220;Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/w10-audio-exclusive-mode.png\" alt=\"disable exclusive mode access to audio\" width=\"542\" height=\"614\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5476\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. Restart the computer.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 4: Run the Audio Troubleshooter<\/h2>\n<p>1. Right-click Start, click Run.<\/p>\n<p>2. Type the following command and press ENTER:<\/p>\n<pre>msdt.exe \/id AudioPlaybackDiagnostic<\/pre>\n<p>3. This starts the Audio troubleshooter tool<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/w10-audio-troubleshooter.png\" alt=\"windows 10 audio troubleshooter\" width=\"571\" height=\"440\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5475\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. Click Next, and follow the onscreen instructions to complete troubleshooter.<\/p>\n<h2>Step 5: Clean-boot Windows to isolate the offending program<\/h2>\n<p>If the problem still happens after following Steps 1 through 4, then it&#8217;s time to isolate the application causing the trouble.<\/p>\n<h3>MS Office Upload Center locks the audio device?<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/office-upload-pause.png\" alt=\"ms office upload center\" width=\"210\" height=\"165\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5480\" \/><em>For Office users, pausing uploads in the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/Microsoft-Office-Upload-Center-f08161d9-ab64-4486-af69-7cd30b34df71\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Microsoft Office Upload Center<\/a> helped. This program which may be  using your audio exclusively. Microsoft Office Upload Center icon can be found in the Taskbar&#8217;s notification area. If you&#8217;re unable to stop it completely, simply pausing uploads may bring back the audio in your system.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have Office installed, then it could be another app causing this trouble. Perform a clean boot troubleshooting or eliminate all startup applications to test.
