(<strong>0x80042308<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>Please try again.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/system-restore-80042308-1.png\" alt=\"System Restore Error 0x80042308 \u201cObject could not be found\u201d\" width=\"478\" height=\"315\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9077\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, the same error code appears when you create a backup using the built-in Windows Backup and Restore tool. It reports the following error:<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">\nThe backup did not complete successfully. A shadow copy could not be created for the following reason: The specified object was not found. (0x80042308)\n<\/div>\n<p>And the failed backup task records an event log entry with ID: 4100.<\/p>\n<pre>\r\nLog Name:      Application\r\nSource:        Windows Backup\r\nDate:          \r\nEvent ID:      4100\r\nTask Category: None\r\nLevel:         Error\r\nKeywords:      Classic\r\nUser:          N\/A\r\nComputer:      \r\nDescription:\r\nFile backup failed because a shadow copy could not be created. The system might be low on resources. The error is: (0x80042308).\r\n<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Fix: System Restore Error 0x80042308 &#8220;Object could not be found&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>The error 0x80042308 may be caused by corrupted volume shadow storage, antivirus software interference, or even due to low disk space.<\/p>\n<p>If temporarily disabling your antivirus software doesn&#8217;t help, clear out all the shadow copies or restore points, and restart the Volume Shadow Copy service. If nothing helps, you may attempt a clean boot troubleshooting to narrow down the issue.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Clear all restore points<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Press <kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>R<\/kbd> to bring up the Run dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>sysdm.cpl<\/code> and press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>In System Protection tab, select the available drives which have protection on<\/li>\n<li>Click Configure, click &#8220;Turn off system protection&#8221; or &#8220;Disable system protection&#8221; (in Windows 10).<\/li>\n<li>Click Apply and click Yes when you see the following prompt:\n<div class=\"err\">Are you sure you want to turn off system protection on this drive?<\/p>\n<p>Existing restore points on the disk will be deleted and new restore points will not be created. You will not be able to use System Restore to undo unwanted system changes on all drive.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5466\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/system-restore-80042308.png\" alt=\"system restore reset 80042308\" width=\"406\" height=\"466\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Turn on the System Protection for the system drive.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr>\n<h3>Step 2: Restart the Volume Shadow Copy Service<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start, type in <code>services.msc<\/code> and then press <code><kbd>ENTER<\/kbd><\/code><\/li>\n<li>Double-click the <strong>Volume Shadow Copy<\/strong> Service (VSS)<\/li>\n<li>Click the Stop button to stop the service.<\/li>\n<li>Click the Start button to restart it.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/system-restore-vss-80042308.png\" alt=\"volume shadow copy service stop and restart\" width=\"406\" height=\"468\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Make sure that the start type of VSS service is set to Manual.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr>\n<h3>Step 3: Clean boot Windows<\/h3>\n<p>Disable 3rd party service and Startup programs using Microsoft Sysinternals&#8217; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sysinternals\/downloads\/autoruns\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Autoruns<\/a><\/strong> tool and restart Windows. See if you&#8217;re able to use System Restore or Windows Backup &#038; Restore features without getting the error 0x80042308.<\/p>\n<p>Perform steps #2 &#8220;Disable Startup Entries&#8221; and #4 &#8220;Disable 3rd Party Services&#8221; in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/clean-boot-windows-autoruns\/\">How to Clean Boot Windows Using the Autoruns Utility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/w10\/cleanboot\/cleanboot5.png\" width=\"599\" height=\"336\" alt=\"System Restore Error 0x80042308 \u201cObject could not be found\u201d\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6338\" \/>If disabling all 3rd party services and rebooting Windows help you fix the System Restore or Windows Backup, the next step is narrow down the exact service that is causing the problem. To find it out, re-enable first half of the services and restart Windows. If the problem doesn\u2019t re-occur, re-enable half of the services from the lower half (i.e. half of the lower half).<\/p>\n<p><em>Clean Boot troubleshooting helps you narrow down a problem. It involves disabling a set of startup programs and Services and then restart the computer. If the issue remains unresolved, you need to disable the remaining set of entries. This way you can isolate which set of programs or Services is causing the problem, and eventually single out the culprit.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<strong>Note:<\/strong> You can do a clean boot using the built-in System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) as well.
