Here&#8217;s a sample error message:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">&lt;3&gt;WSL (515) ERROR: UtilTranslatePathList:2671: Failed to translate D:\\xpdf-tools-win-4.04\\bin64\r\n<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/wsl-invalid-path-error-1.png\" alt=\"wsl invalid path ubuntu UtilTranslatePathList\" width=\"750\" height=\"168\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-52488\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Despite this error, WSL may work fine. But the above error always appears when you start Ubuntu on WSL.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>One or more obsolete entries in the Windows PATH environment variable causes this error. Deleting the bad entry\/entries should resolve the issue.<\/p>\n<p>Ubuntu on WSL tries to resolve each entry in the PATH environment variable and throws an error if there is an invalid entry.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the <strong>UtilTranslatePathList<\/strong> error when starting Ubuntu on WSL, delete the invalid entries from the PATH environment variable.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe<\/li>\n<li>Click Environment variables<\/li>\n<li>Double-click Path under &#8220;System variables&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Delete the obsolete entries and click OK. In this example, the invalid entry is &#8220;<code>D:\\xpdf-tools-win-4.04\\bin64<\/code>&#8220;, as shown in the screenshot.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click Path under &#8220;User variables&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Delete the obsolete entries and click OK.<\/li>\n<li>Click OK, OK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Alternatively, you can resolve this by appending this section to wsl.conf:<\/p>\n<pre>[interop]\r\nappendWindowsPath=false\r\n<\/pre>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>appendWindowsPath<\/td>\n<td>boolean<\/td>\n<td><code>true<\/code><\/td>\n<td>Setting this key will determine whether WSL will add Windows path elements to the $PATH environment variable.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>For more information, check out the  Microsoft Learn article <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/wsl\/wsl-config\">Advanced settings configuration in WSL<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whenever I launch Ubuntu on WSL, you may get the &#8220;UtilTranslatePathList:2671: Failed to translate&#8221; error.
