However, with the wallpaper option enabled for the sign-in screen, there appears a problem where the lock screen shows up with a black background instead of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/safekeep-windows-spotlight-images-windows-10-app-scripts\/\">Windows Spotlight<\/a> image or a wallpaper.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5193\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5193\" style=\"width: 665px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5193\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/black-lock-screen-00.png\" alt=\"lock screen black background\" width=\"675\" height=\"379\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5193\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lock Screen Black Background<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This issue occurs due to the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The visual effects setting <strong>Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing<\/strong> is disabled&#8230;<strong>and<\/strong> the personalize setting &#8220;Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen&#8221; is enabled.<\/li>\n<li>The lock screen wallpapers are missing from the Assets folder, or have the <code>.jpg<\/code> extension added to them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the above settings, when you lock the workstation, the lock screen shows up with a black background. But when you dismiss the lock screen, the sign-in screen appears correctly with the background image.<\/p>\n<h2>[Fix] Windows 10 Lock Screen Black Background and no Wallpaper<\/h2>\n<h3>Fix 1: Enable &#8220;Animate windows..&#8221; setting<\/h3>\n<p>To enable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/speed-windows-10-start-menu-disabling-animation-effects\/\">window animations<\/a>, use System \u2192 Advanced \u2192 <strong>Performance Options<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Press <kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>R<\/kbd> to bring up the Run dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>sysdm.cpl<\/code> and press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li>Select the Advanced tab and click &#8220;Settings&#8221; under Performance.<\/li>\n<li>Enable <strong>Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing<\/strong><br \/>\n \t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5192\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/black-lock-screen-1.png\" alt=\"lock screen black background\" width=\"419\" height=\"285\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click OK, OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Fix 2: Disable background picture on the sign-in screen<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click on the desktop, and click Personalize<\/li>\n<li>In the Settings window that opens, select &#8220;Lock Screen&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Turn off &#8220;Show lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen&#8221;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/black-lock-screen-2.png\" alt=\"lock screen black background\" width=\"697\" height=\"526\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Fix 3: Remove the .jpg extension from files in the Assets folder<\/h3>\n<p>The lock screen may show up with a blank background after the user renamed by adding the <code>.jpg<\/code> extension for files in the Spotlight store folder (<strong>Assets<\/strong>). The lock screen wallpapers are stored in the following folder without a file extension.<\/p>\n<pre>%LOCALAPPDATA%\\Packages\\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\\LocalState\\Assets<\/pre>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve added <code>.jpg<\/code> extension in order to preview them, the Lock Screen may appear blank.<\/p>\n<p><em>For a proper way to preview the spotlight images, you need to copy the files from the Assets directory to another folder and then add a <code>.jpg<\/code> extension.
