Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-51487\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/msi-package-invalid-error.png\" alt=\"error windows installer package invalid\" width=\"490\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>This issue is seen when the installer package has been corrupted, typically during the download process.\u00a0Another possibility is that the folder path contains an invalid character.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To fix the &#8220;This installation package could not be opened&#8221; error, do the following:<\/p>\n<h3>1) Redownload the package<\/h3>\n<p>Redownload the package to see if that fixes the issue. Also, test with different .msi files.<\/p>\n<p>If the same error occurs for all the .msi packages you install, proceed to the next step.<\/p>\n<h3>2) Disable the &#8220;Win31FileSystem&#8221; registry value<\/h3>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible that the &#8220;<code>Win31FileSystem<\/code>&#8221; registry value has been somehow enabled on your computer.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor by running <code>c:\\windows\\regedit.exe<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following location:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\FileSystem<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click &#8220;Win31FileSystem&#8221; and set its data to <code><strong>0<\/strong><\/code><br \/>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<th>Value<\/th>\n<th>Meaning<\/th>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>0<\/td>\n<td>Long file names and extended timestamps are used. Windows\u00a03.1 and\u00a0MS-DOS\u00a0systems will be able to read the files, but will not be able to update the timestamp information or use the long file names (file names would be truncated to filena~1).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>1<\/td>\n<td>Long file names and extended timestamps are not used. Due to the inverted comma, the msiexec.exe process removes the preceding character (i.e., the backslash <code>\\<\/code>), and that makes the path invalid. This could be a bug in msiexec.exe.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, it may return the error <code>-2147286788<\/code> (Hex: <code>0x800300FC<\/code>) which translates to <code>STG_E_INVALIDNAME<\/code>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>So, remove the inverted comma or any other special character from the folder path (or file name).<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, the profile folder may have an invalid character; if that&#8217;s the case, move the .msi package outside your profile folder and run it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you try to install a program by running the .msi package, the following error may occur: This installation package could not be opened.
