The screen will be covered with an overlay and the mouse cursor turns into a plus (+) symbol, which indicates that the capture mode is on.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5101\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/screenshot-win-shift-s-1.png\" alt=\"screenshot specific portion of screen\" width=\"675\" height=\"376\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Since Windows 10 v1809, you&#8217;ll see the following bar at the top. It also <a href=\"#save\">saves the file<\/a> (in recent Windows 10 builds such as 2004\/20H2 and higher) to a temporary folder.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll then see a notification message displaying the miniature image of the captured screen area.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23949\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/snip-sketch-notification.png\" alt=\"snip and sketch notification\" width=\"649\" height=\"372\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you need to annotate, edit or share the image via the Snip &amp; Sketch tool, click on the notification area message. If you miss it, you can still view the notification by opening the Action Center. (<kbd>Win<\/kbd> + <kbd>A<\/kbd>)<\/p>\n<p>Clicking on the notification message opens Snip &amp; Sketch.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23948\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/snip-sketch-window.png\" alt=\"snip and sketch window\" width=\"531\" height=\"512\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, if you don&#8217;t want to open Snip &amp; Sketch but want to paste the captured image into another application (e.g., Word, Paint, chat window, etc.), you can do so.<\/p>\n<p>Open Paint or any other image editor of your choice and paste (<kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + \u00a0<kbd>V<\/kbd>) the image from the clipboard.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5102\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/screenshot-win-shift-s-2.png\" alt=\"screenshot specific portion of screen\" width=\"676\" height=\"452\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Winkey + Shift + S is powered by Snip &amp; Sketch in v1809 &amp; higher<\/h4>\n<p>In Windows 10 v1809 and higher, the <kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>S<\/kbd> is powered by the new <strong>Snip &amp; Sketch<\/strong> feature. You&#8217;re shown the 4 snipping options when you use the keystroke. Snip &amp; Sketch is the new tool that will replace the legacy Snipping Tool in future Windows 10 builds.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note that the native <kbd>Win<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>S<\/kbd> hotkey replaces the one in OneNote 2016. See article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/onenote-screen-clipping-shortcut-key-change\/\">OneNote 2016 Screen Clipping Shortcut Key &#8211; How to Change?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Winkey + Shift + S uses the Snipping Tool in Creators Update<\/h4>\n<p>In Windows 10 Creators Update, the\u00a0 <kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>S<\/kbd> runs the Snipping Tool (in non-interactive mode) under the hood, using a new command-line switch. The following is what&#8217;s executed behind the scenes when you use the <kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>S<\/kbd> keystroke in the Creators Update.<\/p>\n<pre>snippingtool.exe \/clip<\/pre>\n<p>As said earlier, this has changed in v1809 where the keystroke is powered by Snip &amp; Sketch. A background process named <code>ScreenClippingHost.exe<\/code> saves the image (PNG file) in the following folder:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\Users\\%username%\\AppData\\Local\\Packages\\MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS_cw5n1h2txyewy\\TempState\\ScreenClip<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/screenclip-screenshot-folder.png\" alt=\"win shift s screenshot screenclip folder\" width=\"700\" height=\"186\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Reverse-sort the folder by the &#8220;Date&#8221; column to locate the latest screenshot. Also, you can create a shortcut of the ScreenClip folder on your desktop, or pin it to Quick access in File Explorer if you like.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">Note that in earlier builds (e.g., v1909 and earlier), the <code>ScreenClip<\/code> folder would be located at the following path instead:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\Users\\%username%\\AppData\\Local\\Packages\\Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\\TempState\\ScreenClip<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>Every time you press <kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>S<\/kbd> and select a screen area or window, Windows saves the screenshot to two PNG files in addition to saving the image on the Windows clipboard. One PNG file is a resized (lower resolution) screenshot, and the other one is a normal resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, a .JSON file is saved which stores the coordinates of the rectangular area you selected on the screen. The JSON file is a plain-text file that contains a line similar to the following:<\/p>\n<pre>{\"clipPoints\":[{\"x\":0,\"y\":0},{\"x\":345,\"y\":0},{\"x\":345,\"y\":174},{\"x\":0,\"y\":174}]}<\/pre>\n<p>For Freeform snip, the JSON file would contain multiple lines.\u00a0The .JSON file has no significant value for the user.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional Tip:<\/strong> To take a screenshot of the entire screen and save it to a PNG file in your <code>Pictures\\Screenshots<\/code> folder, use the <kbd>WinKey<\/kbd> + <kbd>PrntScrn<\/kbd> keys.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/take-screenshot-windows-different-ways-prnt-scrn\/\">A Complete Guide to Taking Screenshot in Windows<\/a><\/div>\n<h3>Launch Screen snip by pressing PrintScreen (Remapping)<\/h3>\n<p>If you think the three keys combo <kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>S<\/kbd> is tough to operate, you can choose to have your <b><kbd>PrtScn<\/kbd> <\/b> key open the new snipping bar, instead of <b><kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd><\/b><b> + <kbd>S<\/kbd><\/b>. To do so:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Click Start \u2192 Settings \u2192 Ease of Access \u2192 Keyboard \u2192 <strong>Use the PrtScn button to open screen snipping<\/strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9370\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/prntscrn-ease-access.png\" alt=\"complete guide to taking screenshots\" width=\"700\" height=\"188\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the above setting is enabled, your third-party screen capture tool, if installed any, may complain that it\u2019s unable to register hotkey \u2013 PrintScreen. That\u2019s normal, as only one application can register the hotkey at a time.<\/p>\n<h4>Remapping Win+Shift+S to a different key using PowerToys<\/h4>\n<p>Not all users prefer replacing the default shortcuts below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><kbd>PrntScrn<\/kbd><\/li>\n<li><kbd>Win<\/kbd> + PrntScrn<\/li>\n<li><kbd>Alt<\/kbd> + <kbd>PrntScrn<\/kbd><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instead, you can assign <kbd><kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + PrntScrn<\/kbd>\u00a0for the task.<\/p>\n<p>To bind <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>PrntScrn<\/kbd> shortcut to <kbd>Win<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>S<\/kbd>, you can install the <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/powertoys\/install\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Windows 10 PowerToys<\/a> from Microsoft. PowerToys has a feature named Keyboard Manager with which you can remap individual keys as well as shortcuts.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24005\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/win-shift-s-remap-powertoys.png\" alt=\"win shift s remap using powertoys keyboard manager\" width=\"750\" height=\"454\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the above example, I remapped <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>PrntScrn<\/kbd> shortcut to <kbd>Win<\/kbd> + <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> + <kbd>S<\/kbd>. Now, I can invoke the snip screen by pressing <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Print Screen<\/kbd>.
