When you download files using Microsoft Edge, the file download is blocked if the source URL is blacklisted or the downloaded program fails the application reputation check by Microsoft SmartScreen filter.<\/p>\n<p>However, Edge Chromium allows users to download the unsafe file regardless of the warning, by clicking on the &#8220;Keep&#8221; option in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/edge-chromium-frequently-asked-questions\/#downloadspane\">Downloads flyout<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24203\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/prevent-unsafe-files-1.png\" alt=\"prevent unsafe files from being downloaded - edge policies\" width=\"510\" height=\"342\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This article explains how to prevent users from downloading the &#8216;unsafe&#8217; file on Microsoft Edge Chromium.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Prevent Download of Unsafe Files Blocked in Edge<\/h2>\n<h3>For Microsoft Edge (Chromium)<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> This setting is available only on Windows instances that are joined to a Microsoft Active Directory domain, Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise instances that enrolled for device management, or macOS instances that are managed via MDM or joined to a domain via MCX.<\/p>\n<p>On standalone systems, Edge <a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/enterprise\/why-this-policy-is-producing-error-configure-new-tab-page-url\/m-p\/1798875\/highlight\/true#M2545\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ignores this policy<\/a>. Workaround for standalone systems is available at the following link. The trick is to add a fake MDM provider in the registry so that Edge will think that the Windows 10 computer is MDM-Managed.<\/p>\n<pre>Edge Policies for non-Domain-joined Devices \u2013 Gunnar Haslinger:\r\nhttps:\/\/hitco.at\/blog\/apply-edge-policies-for-non-domain-joined-devices\/<\/pre>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following key:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Edge<\/pre>\n<p><em>(The above branch may not exist by default. You may need to create it manually.)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Create a DWORD (32-bit) value named <code>PreventSmartScreenPromptOverrideForFiles<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Double-click <code>PreventSmartScreenPromptOverrideForFiles<\/code> and set its data to <code>1<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In Windows 10 Pro and higher, you can configure the above setting via Group Policy Editor if you have added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/edge-chromium-admx-group-policy-templates\/\">Edge ADMX<\/a> files already. The above registry setting corresponds to the &#8220;<strong>Prevent bypassing of Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warnings about downloads<\/strong>&#8221; GPO under the following branch:<\/p>\n<pre>Computer Configuration \u2192 Administrative Templates \u2192 Microsoft Edge \u2192 SmartScreen settings<\/pre>\n<p>If you enable this setting, your user account is blocked from downloading unverified or unsafe files blocked by the SmartScreen Filter. The setting applies to the current user account only.
