For example, here&#8217;s a case where Desktop has been inadvertently renamed to &#8220;Desk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-50384\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/desktop-name-changed.png\" alt=\"desktop shell folder renamed\" width=\"751\" height=\"280\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>This issue occurs if the caption has been changed in the desktop.ini file. Or, the desktop.ini from another shell folder (e.g., Downloads) has been inadvertently copied to the subject folder &#8211; e.g., Desktop.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the User Shell Folders registry settings may be incorrect.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To fix the caption for the special folder, edit the Desktop.ini for that folder and fix the <strong>LocalizedResourceName<\/strong> value.<\/p>\n<p>Using Notepad, open the <strong>hidden<\/strong> desktop.ini file located in the <strong>Desktop<\/strong> folder and fix its contents. To open the desktop.ini file for your Desktop folder, do the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open the Desktop folder.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>cmd.exe<\/strong> in the address bar and press Enter.\u00a0This opens Command Prompt in that specific directory.<\/li>\n<li>In the Command Prompt window, run the following command:\n<pre>notepad.exe desktop.ini<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-50389\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/open-desktop-ini-file.png\" alt=\"desktop.ini open in notepad\" width=\"751\" height=\"135\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This opens the desktop.ini file in Notepad.<\/li>\n<li>In Notepad, completely replace the desktop.ini file contents with the following lines:\n<pre>[.ShellClassInfo]\r\nLocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\\system32\\shell32.dll,-21769\r\nIconResource=%SystemRoot%\\system32\\imageres.dll,-183\r\n[LocalizedFileNames]\r\ncomputer.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\\system32\\shell32.dll,-9216\r\nHyper-V Manager.lnk=@%ProgramFiles%\\Hyper-V\\SnapInAbout.dll,-131\r\n4 - Control Panel.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\\system32\\shell32.dll,-4161\r\nFile Explorer.lnk=@%SystemRoot%\\system32\\shell32.dll,-22067\r\n<\/pre>\n<div class=\"qt\"><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> The above contents apply to the <strong>Desktop<\/strong> folder <strong>only<\/strong>. If you need to fix the caption for a different shell folder, use the correct desktop.ini contents.
