The following are the root keys:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (HKCR for short)<\/li>\n<li>HKEY_CURRENT_USER (HKCU)<\/li>\n<li>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM)<\/li>\n<li>HKEY_USERS (HKU)<\/li>\n<li>HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG (HKCC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If <code>HKEY_CURRENT_USER<\/code> and <code>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE<\/code> have identical registry subkeys, you can switch between the two branches quickly by right-clicking on a key and clicking <strong>Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER<\/strong> or <strong>Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take the case of Run registry keys. Startup entries for your current user account are stored here:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run<\/pre>\n<p>And the per-system Startup entries are here:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Run<\/pre>\n<p>When you&#8217;re in the <code>HKCU..\\Run<\/code> branch, you can quickly switch to <code>HKLM..\\Run<\/code> and the other way round using the &#8220;Go to &#8230;&#8221; right-click menu option.
