With the Fast Startup feature enabled by default, when the user shuts down the computer, what happens under the hood is a hybrid shutdown sequence.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When a user issues the shutdown command, all user accounts are logged off completely. Then the system hibernates at this point &#8212; writing the OS kernel image and loaded drivers to the hiberfil.sys file, located in the root of your system drive (typically C:).<\/p>\n<p>Powering on the computer again would cause the hiberfile to be loaded, restoring the previously saved image of the Windows kernel and loaded drivers. That&#8217;s how the Fast Startup works. This way, boot ups are faster when compared to the traditional shutdown &amp; cold startup.<\/p>\n<p>Hiberfile (hiberfil.sys) type can be set to &#8220;Full&#8221; or &#8220;Reduced.&#8221; In &#8220;Full&#8221; mode (default setting), the hiberfile size would be 40% of the total physical memory.<\/p>\n<p>Note: In Windows 7, the hibernation file&#8217;s default size equals 75% of the total physical memory.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4871\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4871\" style=\"width: 671px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4871\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/hiberfile-size-2.png\" alt=\"reduced or full hiberfile type\" width=\"681\" height=\"213\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4871\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Total Physical Memory &#8211; 7.9 GB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4872\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4872\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4872\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/hiberfile-size-1.png\" alt=\"reduced or full hiberfile type\" width=\"680\" height=\"187\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Full Hiberfile size &#8211; 40% of 7.9 GB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Whereas in Reduced mode, hiberfile consumes disk space that equals to only <strong>20% of the RAM<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>reduced<\/strong> mode is sufficient if you need the hiberboot (Fast Startup) feature but don&#8217;t need the (full) hibernate and the hybrid sleep features; you can use the (S1-S3) sleep feature though. Type the following command and press ENTER.<\/p>\n<pre>powercfg \/h \/type reduced<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/hiberfile-size-3.png\" alt=\"reduced or full hiberfile type\" width=\"680\" height=\"127\" \/><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4869\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4869\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4869\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/hiberfile-size-4.png\" alt=\"reduced or full hiberfile type\" width=\"680\" height=\"187\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4869\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Reduced&#8221; Hiberfile size &#8211; 20% of 7.9 GB<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You won&#8217;t be able to manually put your system to Hibernate mode when hiberfile type is set to Reduced &#8212; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/restore-hibernate-option-winx-menu-windows-8-10\/\">&#8220;Hibernate&#8221; command<\/a> wouldn&#8217;t even show up in the Start as well as in the Win + X menu.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the hybrid sleep option would be disabled.
