In Windows 11, the New menu does not list the “Rich Text Format” (often abbreviated RTF) entry by default. This happens even though you associate all .RTF files with WordPad instead of MS Word.<\/p>\n

(The Rich Text Format is a proprietary document file format developed by Microsoft for cross-platform document interchange with Microsoft products. WordPad has been removed in Windows 11, starting with Windows 11 version 24H2.)<\/em><\/p>\n

This article tells you how to add the missing RTF entry to the New menu.<\/p>\n

Add \u201cRich Text Format\u201d to the New Menu<\/h2>\n

To add “Rich Text Format” to the New menu, follow these steps:<\/p>\n

  1. If you’re using Windows 11 24H2 and above, copy the Wordpad files from the page \u2192 How to Get Back WordPad in Windows 11 24H2<\/a>.<\/li>\n
  2. Once done, download rtf_shellnew_windows_11.reg<\/a> (zipped) to your computer.<\/li>\n
  3. Unzip and extract rtf_shellnew_windows_11.reg<\/code> to the desktop.<\/li>\n
  4. Right-click extract rtf_shellnew_windows_11.reg<\/code> and click “Merge”.<\/li>\n
  5. Click Yes to confirm.<\/li>\n
  6. Click OK.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Log off and log back in for the changes to take effect, or restart the Explorer shell<\/a> via Task Manager.<\/p>\n
