The entries are saved to the registry and persist until you manually clear them.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>If the Run dialog (<kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>R<\/kbd>) doesn&#8217;t retain the recently used command history (a.k.a. MRU entries), it can be due to the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The &#8220;Show most used apps&#8221; option is disabled in the Start menu settings.<\/li>\n<li>The <code>ClearRecentDocsOnExit<\/code> registry value is set to <code>1<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>The user recently cleared the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/quick-access-home-stuck-pinned-items-reset\/\">Quick Access history<\/a>. Doing so erases the Run command history, as well.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This article tells you how to fix the problem in Windows 10 and 11.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Fix: Run Command History Not Saved<\/h2>\n<p>To make the Run dialog retain the history of commands entered, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Settings, click Personalization, and click Start.<\/li>\n<li>Enable the <strong>Show most used apps<\/strong> option.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4732\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/run-mru-not-saved.png\" alt=\"run history not saved\" width=\"299\" height=\"435\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> If &#8220;Show most used apps&#8221; setting is grayed out and disabled, please see the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/show-most-used-apps-option-grayed-windows-10\/\">&#8220;Show Most Used Apps&#8221; Setting Greyed out<\/a> for the fix.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>If that doesn&#8217;t help, there is another setting that you need to check.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>) and go to the following key:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Explorer<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>If the value <code>ClearRecentDocsOnExit<\/code> exists, right-click on it and choose Delete.<\/li>\n<li>Repeat the same in the following key:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Policies\\Explorer<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Note that none of the above registry keys exist by default. They exist only if a third-party program sets a GPO or registry-based policy. If the keys don&#8217;t exist, ignore the step.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p>The <code>ClearRecentDocsOnExit<\/code> registry value, if set to <code>1<\/code>, it clearing the recent documents history along with the Run commands history automatically at every shutdown. The Run dialog history is stored in the following registry key:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\RunMRU<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thirdly, if you clear the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/quick-access-home-stuck-pinned-items-reset\/\">Quick access history<\/a> via Folder Options, it also erases the Run command history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Run dialog in Windows stores the commands, folder paths, and website addresses you typed.
