Or, are you seeing the error &#8220;<strong>Your webcam is currently being used by another application<\/strong>&#8221; when using Skype or other messaging application?<\/p>\n<p>The built-in Camera app may throw the error <strong>0xa00f4243<\/strong> saying<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">\n<p><strong>Close other apps<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It looks like another app is using the camera already.<\/p>\n<p>If you need it, here&#8217;s the error code:<br \/>\n0xA00F4243&lt;CameraReservedByAnotherApp&gt; (0xC00D3704)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9203\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/camera-reserved-by-another-app.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"674\" height=\"415\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is a neat way to find which program is using your webcam or microphone.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/device-census-using-webcam-telemetry-kaspersky-warning\/\">What is Device Census and Why is It Using My Webcam?<\/a><\/em><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Find Which Program is Using Your Webcam Currently<\/h2>\n<p>Some antivirus programs (e.g., Avast Premium) have the feature to block webcam access. Avast&#8217;s Webcam Shield prevents applications and malware from accessing your PC&#8217;s webcam without your consent. With Webcam Shield enabled, untrusted applications can&#8217;t capture images or videos and send the content outside of your PC to compromise your privacy.<\/p>\n<p>If disabling webcam protection in your antivirus software doesn&#8217;t release the camera, then try this procedure:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sysinternals\/processexplorer.aspx?f=255&amp;MSPPError=-2147217396\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Process Explorer<\/a> from Microsoft, and run the program elevated (Run as Administrator).<\/li>\n<li>Find the NT <a href=\"https:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/windows\/hardware\/ff557722(v=vs.85).aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Device Name<\/a> of your Webcam and Microphone, using Device Manager. Start Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), expand &#8220;Imaging devices&#8221; and double-click on the webcam name to open the Properties.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4718\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/webcam-device-handle-0.png\" alt=\"webcam used by which program\" width=\"700\" height=\"269\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In the device&#8217;s Properties sheet, select the Details tab, and select &#8220;Physical Device Object Name&#8221; from the drop-down list box.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4721\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/webcam-device-handle-2.png\" alt=\"webcam used by which program\" width=\"400\" height=\"455\" \/><\/li>\n<li>The device name looks something like <code>\\Device\\00000032<\/code> or contains alphabets after the <code>\\Device<\/code> prefix. Type or paste the device object name you copied to the clipboard.<\/li>\n<li>Press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd>. That shows the application(s) that use your webcam.\n<figure id=\"attachment_4722\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4722\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4722\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/webcam-device-handle-6.png\" alt=\"webcam used by which program\" width=\"494\" height=\"266\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Skype app (legit) is using the webcam<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em>If it shows an application which you don&#8217;t recognize or it sounds like malware, kill that process and disconnect from the internet. Do a thorough scan with specialized anti-malware and anti-virus software.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Due to a change made in the Windows 10 anniversary update, when searching for the webcam device handle, it may show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/view-resources-usage-each-service-svchost-windows-10\/\">Svchost.exe<\/a> as the process which is using the device.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/webcam-device-handle-3.png\" alt=\"webcam used by which program\" width=\"494\" height=\"266\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It runs under &#8220;Windows Camera Frame Server&#8221;, a new model introduced in Windows 10 Anniversary Update which enables multiple clients to access video frames from camera devices.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/webcam-device-handle-4.png\" alt=\"webcam used by which program\" width=\"697\" height=\"426\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Creating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/webcam-anniversary-update-windows-10-yuys-standard\/\">EnableFrameServer<\/a>\u00a0registry value and setting it to <code>0<\/code> (and restarting the computer) would cause the exact program name to show up when finding device handles.
