Disk Cleanup doesn&#8217;t remember the options you enabled the last time when you used it.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h4>Here is a neat trick to start Disk Cleanup with checkboxes for all the cleanup options already enabled, without needing to alter the registry.<\/h4>\n<h2>Start Disk Cleanup with the &#8220;LOWDISK&#8221; parameter<\/h2>\n<p>Using the &#8220;LOWDISK&#8221; argument with Cleanmgr.exe starts Disk Cleanup as usual, but with all checkboxes ticked so that you don&#8217;t have to.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cleanmgr-lowdisk-1.png\" alt=\"disk cleanup checkboxes\" width=\"375\" height=\"470\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4671\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Create a desktop shortcut with the following command-line:<\/p>\n<pre>cleanmgr.exe \/LOWDISK<\/pre>\n<p>You can also edit the target field of the Disk Cleanup shortcut located in the Administrative Tools folder, here:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Administrative Tools<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cleanmgr-lowdisk-2.png\" alt=\"disk cleanup checkboxes\" width=\"650\" height=\"151\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4669\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This shortcut is used when you search for and click &#8220;Disk Cleanup&#8221; from Start menu search results.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cleanmgr-lowdisk-5.png\" alt=\"disk cleanup checkboxes\" width=\"394\" height=\"209\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4672\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Note that you&#8217;ll need to run Disk Cleanup as an administrator if you want to remove unneeded files in system-wide locations &#8212; which means files that are outside your user profile folder.<\/p>\n<h2>Cleanmgr.exe &#8211; Other switches<\/h2>\n<p>Typing <code>cleanmgr.exe \/?<\/code> shows this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cleanmgr-lowdisk-3.png\" alt=\"disk cleanup checkboxes\" width=\"475\" height=\"163\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4668\" \/><\/p>\n<pre>cleanmgr [\/SAGESET:n | \/SAGERUN:n | TUNEUP:n | \/LOWDISK | \/VERYLOWDISK | \/SETUP | \/AUTOCLEAN]<\/pre>\n<p>But that&#8217;s the maximum information it provides you. Microsoft has a <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/315246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Knowledge-base article<\/a> that explains the two Cleanmgr.exe switches <code>\/sageset<\/code> and <code>\/sagerun<\/code>. Official documentation for switches <code>\/TUNEUP<\/code>, <code>\/LOWDISK<\/code>, <code>\/VERYLOWDISK<\/code>, <code>\/SETUP<\/code> and <code>\/AUTOCLEAN<\/code> is missing.<\/p>\n<p><code>\/VERYLOWDISK<\/code> starts Disk Cleanup without showing any prompts and runs the cleanup immediately, in non-interactive mode. Presumably, this option cleans up all possible items to reclaim disk space. It&#8217;s possible that the system executes Cleanmgr.exe with this switch when the free disk space becomes dangerously low &#8212; at a certain threshold. After cleanup, it shows a dialog mentioning the amount free space remaining in the system drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/cleanmgr-lowdisk-4.png\" alt=\"disk cleanup checkboxes\" width=\"352\" height=\"236\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4670\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>If you know what the other Disk Cleanup parameters do exactly, let&#8217;s know that in the comments section below.<\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you open the Disk Cleanup tool, most if not all of the cleanup options are unchecked by default.
