You can pin website shortcuts to the Windows 10 Start screen using Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Firefox.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<h4>Pin Websites to Start in Windows 10<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#url\">Using &#8220;Pin to Start&#8221; command via All apps menu<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#url2\">Using &#8220;Pin to Start&#8221; context menu for Website shortcut<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#chrome\">Pin to Start (as app) using Google Chrome<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#edge\">&#8220;Pin to Start&#8221; using Microsoft Edge<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h2><a id=\"url\"><\/a>Pinning Website Shortcuts (.URLs) to Start<\/h2>\n<p>Create a regular .URL shortcut for the website you&#8217;re going to pin. To create a website shortcut on your desktop, visit the website using any browser other than Edge, such as Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the website in Internet Explorer, right-click on the web page, and click Create shortcut. However, when using this method in Internet Explorer, it creates a &#8220;Pinned Site shortcut&#8221; (.website) file on your desktop, instead of the standard Internet Shortcut. The special site shortcut (.website) launches the website using Internet Explorer instead of your default browser.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Or, right-click on the desktop, click New &gt; Shortcut,. Type in the website address, such as:<\/p>\n<pre>http:\/\/www.superuser.com<\/pre>\n<p>These two methods won&#8217;t save the favicon. The registry tweak adds a Pin to Start option for all file types, including website shortcuts having the &#8220;.URL&#8221; extension.<\/p>\n<p>Create a site shortcut on the desktop, and change the icon as desired. Move the shortcut to the Start menu &#8211; Programs folder.<\/p>\n<pre>%AppData%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4656\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pin-website-start-menu-10.png\" alt=\"pin website to start\" width=\"588\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Right-click on it and click Pin to Start.<\/p>\n<p>This method is almost the same as the 2nd method &#8212; only differing in how you Pin the shortcut to the Windows 10 Start screen.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"chrome\"><\/a>Pin Website shortcuts Using Google Chrome<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Google Chrome and navigate to the website you want to add to the Start screen.<\/li>\n<li>At the top right, click the more button which is denoted by 3 vertical dots.<\/li>\n<li>Click More tools and click <strong>Create shortcut&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18602\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/chrome-create-site-shortcut.png\" alt=\"chrome site shortcut\" width=\"682\" height=\"588\" \/><strong>Note:<\/strong> In older versions of Google Chrome, the option was called <strong>Add to Desktop&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/pin-website-start-menu-11.png\" alt=\"pin website to start\" width=\"650\" height=\"193\" \/><br \/>\nThis adds the website shortcut to the desktop.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the shortcut and click <strong>Pin to Start<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Note that this method creates a regular .lnk shortcut pointing to <code>Chrome_Proxy.exe<\/code> (or <code>Chrome.exe<\/code> in older versions) followed by a unique app identifier which only Chrome can recognize. The shortcut target looks like this:<\/p>\n<pre>\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Google\\Chrome\\Application\\chrome_proxy.exe\" --profile-directory=Default --app-id=ibajjhglmnlmhjnnefebjibknochnfdk<\/pre>\n<p>Double-clicking this shortcut or the Start menu item launches the website using Google Chrome.<\/p>\n<p>You can pin as many website shortcuts to the Start screen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quick Tip #1:<\/strong> You may apply the Google Chrome Start menu icon fix as in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/google-chrome-start-tile-icon-fix-script\/\">Google Chrome Start Screen Tile Icon Large (Fix)<\/a>, to get rid of the black background behind the Chrome icon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quick Tip #2:<\/strong> You can still use your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/assign-hotkey-windows-10-start-menu-shortcuts\/\">preferred keyboard hotkeys<\/a> for your website shortcuts, even if you&#8217;ve moved them to the Start menu\\Programs folder per the steps in Method 2 and 3.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"edge\"><\/a>Pinning websites to Start &#8211; Using Microsoft Edge<\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft Edge has a built-in option to pin the current webpage to the Windows 10 Start screen.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Microsoft Edge Chromium canary build version 87 introduced the capability to Pin websites to the Start screen. This feature has been incorporated in the regular version of Microsoft Edge (Chromium) in version 90 and higher.<\/p>\n<h3>Edge Chromium<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open Microsoft Edge (Chromium) and open a webpage.<\/li>\n<li>Click the ellipsis (three dots) icon on the top right.<\/li>\n<li>Click More tools, and click <strong>Pin to Start<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19309\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/ms-edge-chromium-pin-start-taskbar-1.png\" alt=\"edge chromium pin to start or pin to taskbar\" width=\"657\" height=\"378\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Note that in Edge Chromium version 87 and higher you\u2019ll be able to pin a website to the Start screen in Windows 10.
