You can move a set of work-related programs to a separate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/task-view-new-desktop-button-missing-windows-10\/\">virtual desktop<\/a>, having your entertainment and social networking stuff in another virtual desktop. When required, you can also make a program window or all window instances of a program available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/make-window-visible-all-virtual-desktops-windows-10-taskview\/\">all virtual desktops<\/a>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/taskview-show-window-all-vdesktops.png\" alt=\"disable virtual desktop switching on mouse hover\" width=\"650\" height=\"594\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3986\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can create new virtual desktops or switch to an existing one from the Task View (<kbd>Winkey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Tab<\/kbd>) panel. In the Task View interface, when you <strong>hover<\/strong> your mouse pointer over a virtual desktop thumbnail, that particular desktop is selected, and the thumbnail preview of open windows in that virtual desktop are shown in the switcher interface above. Tapping <kbd>{ESC}<\/kbd> or <kbd>{ENTER}<\/kbd> would dismiss the Task View.<\/p>\n<h4>Today&#8217;s post tells you how to disable &#8220;hover to select&#8221; virtual desktop feature in the Task View interface, to avoid accidental switching, and for those who find the feature a little bit inconvenient.<\/h4>\n<p>After applying the registry edit in this article, switching virtual desktops via the Task View interface will require a mouse-click (instead of just hovering over) on a virtual desktop icon.<\/p>\n<h2>Disable Virtual Desktop Selection on Mouse Hover<\/h2>\n<p>Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and go to:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer<\/pre>\n<p>Create a DWORD value named <strong>HoverSelectDesktops<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set the value data for <strong>HoverSelectDesktops<\/strong> to 0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/hover-select-virtual-desktops-1.png\" alt=\"disable virtual desktop switching on mouse hover\" width=\"650\" height=\"212\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4608\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Exit the Registry Editor, logoff and login back or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">restart the Explorer shell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That would disable the &#8220;hover to select&#8221; virtual desktops feature.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tip:<\/strong> To flip through virtual desktops using keyboard, use the <kbd>WinKey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Left<\/kbd> or <kbd>WinKey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Ctrl<\/kbd> + <kbd>Right<\/kbd> arrow key stroke.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Virtual Desktops feature in Windows 10 provides a nice way to keep your program windows organized.
