In the Task Scheduler properties page, all the options may be grayed out, and the service <strong>Startup type<\/strong> cannot be changed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/schedule-grayed.png\" width=\"431\" height=\"493\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/view-edit-service-permissions-windows\/\">How to View and Modify Service Permissions in Windows<\/a><\/div>\n<p>This article tells you how to configure the Task Scheduler service using a couple of methods.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Task Scheduler Service Grayed Out in Services MMC<\/h2>\n<div class=\"qt\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> The following methods will help you configure the Task Scheduler service&#8217;s startup type, but they won&#8217;t enable the grayed-out buttons in the Task Scheduler service properties dialog.<\/p>\n<p>To permanently enable the options in the Task Scheduler service properties, modify the service permissions as mentioned in the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/view-edit-service-permissions-windows\/\">How to View and Modify Service Permissions<\/a>.<\/div>\n<h3>Method 1: Change service settings using Regedit<\/h3>\n<p>The Task Scheduler service&#8217;s start type is not configurable using the Services MMC console. To reset the startup type of the Task Scheduler service to the default setting (i.e., Automatic), do the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/scheduler.reg\">scheduler.reg<\/a><\/b> and choose &#8220;Save link as&#8221; in your browser.<\/li>\n<li>Save the file to your Desktop.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the file and choose <\/span><b style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Merge<\/b>.<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows for the changes to take effect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This REG file applies to Windows 11, Windows 10, and earlier.<\/p>\n<h4>Additional Information<\/h4>\n<p>The Task Scheduler service settings are stored in the registry key:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Schedule<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9574\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/scheduler-grayed-out-startup-type-registry.png\" alt=\"task scheduler startup type registry\" width=\"697\" height=\"193\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The DWORD value named <strong>Start<\/strong> determines how the service is started. The valid values are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2<\/strong> is Automatic<\/li>\n<li><strong>3<\/strong> is Manual<\/li>\n<li><strong>4<\/strong> is disabled<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The above REG file resets it to <code><b>2<\/b><\/code>, which is the Windows-default setting.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Using the reg.exe console tool<\/h4>\n<p>Alternatively, you can run the following command from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window to set Task Scheduler startup type to Automatic:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Schedule \/v Start \/t reg_dword \/d 2 \/f<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"runassystem\"><\/a>Method 2: Use the SYSTEM account to configure the service<\/h3>\n<p>To configure the Task Scheduler service, stop, or restart it via the Services console or command-line, you may need to use the LocalSystem account.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start Command Prompt (cmd.exe) under SYSTEM (&#8220;LocalSystem&#8221;) account. For more information, check out the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-system-localsystem-account-windows\/\">How to Run a Program as SYSTEM (LocalSystem)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Run the following command from the Command Prompt window:\n<pre>mmc.exe services.msc<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/mmc-services-localsystem.png\" alt=\"mmc services.msc localsystem account\" width=\"701\" height=\"142\" \/><br \/>\nThis starts the MMC under the SYSTEM account.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19525\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/mmc-scheduler-options-enabled.png\" alt=\"scheduler service button grayed out - view and edit service permissions\" width=\"406\" height=\"468\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>As you see, the Start button and the Startup type list boxes are enabled when you access the Services MMC using the SYSTEM account.
