Using a registry tweak discussed in this post, you can pin any file (of any type) to the Start screen in Windows 10.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Registry Tweak to allow Pinning any file to the Start screen<\/h2>\n<p>Start Regedit.exe and navigate to the following key:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\AllFileSystemObjects\\shellex\\ContextMenuHandlers<\/pre>\n<p>Create a subkey named <strong>{470C0EBD-5D73-4d58-9CED-E91E22E23282}<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Selecting the key {470C0EBD-5D73-4d58-9CED-E91E22E23282}, double-click the (default) value in the right-pane, and type &#8220;Pin to Start&#8221;. This step is optional, though.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/pin_any_file_start_windows_10_4.png\" alt=\"pin any file to start\" width=\"635\" height=\"322\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4394\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/pin_any_file_start_windows_10_1.png\" alt=\"pin any file to start\" width=\"633\" height=\"508\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4391\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, to pin a file, first create a shortcut to that file, right-click on the shortcut and click Pin to Start.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/pin_any_file_start_windows_10_2.png\" alt=\"pin any file to start\" width=\"839\" height=\"622\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4392\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The data file (in this case, .txt file type) gets pinned to the Start screen. The same method works for any other file type. And, the desktop shortcut can now be deleted.
