{"id":4254,"date":"2016-10-03T12:01:14","date_gmt":"2016-10-03T06:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=4254"},"modified":"2019-05-12T02:53:40","modified_gmt":"2019-05-12T02:53:40","slug":"show-process-id-file-explorer-title-bar-windows-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/show-process-id-file-explorer-title-bar-windows-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Show Process ID in File Explorer Title Bar in Windows 10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a hidden registry setting in Windows 10, which when enabled shows the explorer.exe Process ID (PID) in File Explorer title bar, and tells if a folder window is running under the shell process, or as a separate process.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Show Process ID in File Explorer<\/h2>\n<p>Start Regedit.exe and go to:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer<\/pre>\n<p>Create a DWORD 32-bit value named <strong>ShowPidInTitle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Set the data for ShowPidInTitle to 1<\/p>\n<p>Exit the Registry Editor. Logoff and login back or do a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">clean restart of the Explorer shell<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Shell process vs separate process<\/h2>\n<p>If the folder windows are run under the default Explorer shell, the PID of Explorer shell is displayed \u2013 indicated as &#8220;shell process: [PID]&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/explorer-show-processid-title-1.png\" alt=\"show process id explorer title bar\" width=\"489\" height=\"183\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4256\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve enabled <strong>Launch folder windows in a separate process<\/strong> option in Folder Options settings, launching folders would create additional explorer.exe instance(s) with a different PID, of course. This also happens if you run <strong>explorer.exe [folderpath]<\/strong> directly from Run dialog.
