With Sticky Notes, you can create notes, type, ink, or add a picture, and stick them to the desktop.<\/p>\n<p>With Windows 10 v1607, the classic desktop version of Sticky Notes is discontinued and it is transformed into a modern or UWP app with Cortana integration and other features. The Sticky Notes content is now saved to a database file named <strong>plum.sqlite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to recover your Sticky Notes data from a broken Windows 10 installation in order to transfer it to another computer, this article tells you how to do that.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<h4>Contents<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#backup\">Backup Sticky Notes Data in Windows 10 [New format]<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#backupold\">Backup Legacy Sticky Notes Data File in Windows 10 [StickyNotes.snt]<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#convert\">Convert legacy Sticky Notes data (.snt file) to the new format [plum.sqlite]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h2><a id=\"backup\"><\/a>Backup Sticky Notes Data in Windows 10<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Close Sticky Notes if it&#8217;s running.<\/li>\n<li>Open the following folder. The easiest way is to copy the following path, paste in Explorer address bar, and press <kbd>ENTER<\/kbd>.\n<pre>%LocalAppData%\\Packages\\Microsoft.MicrosoftStickyNotes_8wekyb3d8bbwe\\LocalState<\/pre>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19888\" style=\"width: 689px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19888 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/plum-sqlite-sticky-notes-backup.png\" alt=\"sticky notes backup plum.sqlite\" width=\"699\" height=\"206\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sticky Notes data files in Windows 10 v2004\/v20H2<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>You&#8217;ll see these files in that folder:<\/p>\n<pre>15cbbc93e90a4d56bf8d9a29305b8981.storage.session\r\nEcs.dat\r\nplum.sqlite\r\nplum.sqlite-shm\r\nplum.sqlite-wal<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Backup all the files (most importantly, the database files namely, <code>plum.sqlite<\/code>, <code>plum.sqlite-shm<\/code>, and <code>plum.sqlite-wal<\/code>) to a folder. In Windows 10 versions earlier than 1809, you may see only <code>plum.sqlite<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>After logging in to a new user profile, or to another Windows 10 computer, transfer the above files to the <strong>LocalState<\/strong> folder in your new profile. Before that, make sure that the Sticky Notes is <strong>not<\/strong> already running.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>(The above method was last reviewed in November 2020, and verified to work on v2004 and v20H2. However, I couldn&#8217;t transfer the Sticky Notes data from a v2004 system to a v20H2 system. Whereas, the restoration was successful from a v20H2 computer \u2192 v2004 computer.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"backupold\"><\/a>Backup Sticky Notes (Older versions) Data<\/h2>\n<p>The classic desktop Sticky Notes program present in Windows 10 v1511 and earlier, and in previous Operating Systems, stores the information in a file named <strong>StickyNotes.snt<\/strong> in the following folder:<\/p>\n<pre>%AppData%\\Microsoft\\Sticky Notes<\/pre>\n<h3><a id=\"convert\"><\/a>Convert legacy Sticky Notes file StickyNotes.snt to the new format<\/h3>\n<p>There is a hidden feature in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update which allows transfer or conversion of legacy or classic Sticky Notes .snt file to the new format. The Sticky Notes modern app (UWP) stores the data in a database file named <code>plum.sqlite<\/code>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p><strong>Important note:<\/strong> The following data file conversion method doesn&#8217;t work if you have newer builds, especially v1809. If you have a legacy data file of .snt type, you&#8217;ll need to use another Windows 10 computer running Anniversary Update v1607 and follow the procedure below.<\/p>\n<div class=\"newline\">Alternately, you can get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-iso-direct-download-mct-useragent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anniversary Update ISO image<\/a>, install the Windows 10 build in a virtual environment (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualbox.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oracle VM VirtualBox<\/a>), and convert the legacy data file .snt to .sqlite format.
