The task can be accomplished using the DISM, PowerShell, PnPUtil, or the Driver Store Explorer app. Let&#8217;s see how to backup and restore device drivers in Windows 10 and Windows 11.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If you have OEM branded computer, you&#8217;re usually provided with a restore media or a recovery partition on the hard drive. And restoring the computer using the OEM&#8217;s recovery options would put back all the pre-installed software and drivers. But if you&#8217;re using a custom-built computer, you need to install the drivers for each device in the system every time you do a clean install. You&#8217;d have to store the driver media for each hardware safely. Please use one of the methods below:<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Using DISM<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Create a folder where the drivers will be extracted &#8212; e.g., <code>d:\\drivers-backup<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Open <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">Command Prompt (Admin)<\/a>, and type the following command:\n<pre>dism \/online \/export-driver \/destination:d:\\drivers-backup<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3842\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/drivers-backup-restore-windows-10-6.png\" alt=\"drivers backup restore in windows 10\" width=\"650\" height=\"276\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This backs up the complete set of 3rd party driver packages in the current Windows installation to the <b>Drivers-Backup<\/b> folder on the <code>D:\\<\/code> drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3837\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/drivers-backup-restore-windows-10-1.png\" alt=\"drivers backup restore in windows 10\" width=\"410\" height=\"810\" \/><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Option 2:\u00a0Using PowerShell<\/h3>\n<p>PowerShell internally uses DISM to export the drivers.<\/p>\n<p>Start PowerShell (admin) and execute the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>Export-WindowsDriver -Online -Destination D:\\Drivers-Backup<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3841\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/drivers-backup-restore-windows-10-5.png\" alt=\"drivers backup restore in windows 10\" width=\"650\" height=\"116\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The result is the same. It backs up the drivers in the same way as DISM.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Option 3: Using PnpUtil.exe<\/h3>\n<p>The Microsoft PnP Utility (PnpUtil.exe) can be used to export and import device drivers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Export all drivers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From Admin Command Prompt, run:<\/p>\n<pre>pnputil \/export-driver * D:\\Drivers-Backup<\/pre>\n<p>The above command backs up all the device drivers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Export a particular driver<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To export a particular driver, you need to know that driver&#8217;s published name (OEM#.inf). To find that, run:<\/p>\n<p>To find the published name (OEM#) of a driver, run:<\/p>\n<pre>pnputil \/enum-drivers<\/pre>\n<p><em>(Alternatively, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/driver-uninstall-completely-windows\/#pnputil\">use DISM<\/a> to display all driver info in a tabular column format.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Then, use this syntax to export that particular driver:<\/p>\n<pre>pnputil \/export-driver oem#.inf D:\\Drivers-Backup<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>pnputil \/export-driver oem48.inf D:\\Drivers-Backup<\/pre>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note: PnpUtil.exe doesn&#8217;t seem to backup the PNF file for each driver. From the File menu, click &#8220;Export all drivers&#8221;.
