This article tells you how to backup and restore the device driver packages in Windows 10 or 11. The task can be accomplished using the DISM, PowerShell, PnPUtil, or the Driver Store Explorer app. Let’s see how to backup and restore device drivers in Windows 10 and Windows 11.<\/p>\n

If you have OEM branded computer, you’re usually provided with a restore media or a recovery partition on the hard drive. And restoring the computer using the OEM’s recovery options would put back all the pre-installed software and drivers. But if you’re using a custom-built computer, you need to install the drivers for each device in the system every time you do a clean install. You’d have to store the driver media for each hardware safely. Instead, you can backup the driver packages beforehand.<\/p>\n

Backup 3rd Party Drivers in Windows 10 and 11<\/h2>\n

There are many ways to backup the device drivers using the built-in tools in Windows. Please use one of the methods below:<\/p>\n

Option 1: Using DISM<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Create a folder where the drivers will be extracted — e.g., d:\\drivers-backup<\/code><\/li>\n
  2. Open Command Prompt (Admin)<\/a>, and type the following command:\n
    dism \/online \/export-driver \/destination:d:\\drivers-backup<\/pre>\n
    \"drivers<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    This backs up the complete set of 3rd party driver packages in the current Windows installation to the Drivers-Backup<\/b> folder on the D:\\<\/code> drive.<\/p>\n

    Option 2:\u00a0Using PowerShell<\/h3>\n
    PowerShell internally uses DISM to export the drivers.<\/p>\n
    Start PowerShell (admin) and execute the following command:<\/p>\n
    Export-WindowsDriver -Online -Destination D:\\Drivers-Backup<\/pre>\n

    The result is the same. It backs up the drivers in the same way as DISM.<\/p>\n

    Option 3: Using PnpUtil.exe<\/h3>\n
    The Microsoft PnP Utility (PnpUtil.exe) can be used to export and import device drivers.<\/p>\n
    Export all drivers<\/strong><\/p>\n
    From Admin Command Prompt, run:<\/p>\n
    pnputil \/export-driver * D:\\Drivers-Backup<\/pre>\n
    The above command backs up all the device drivers.<\/p>\n
    Export a particular driver<\/strong><\/p>\n
    To export a particular driver, you need to know that driver’s published name (OEM#.inf). To find that, run:<\/p>\n
    To find the published name (OEM#) of a driver, run:<\/p>\n
    pnputil \/enum-drivers<\/pre>\n
    (Alternatively, you can use DISM<\/a> to display all driver info in a tabular column format.)<\/em><\/p>\n
    Then, use this syntax to export that particular driver:<\/p>\n
    pnputil \/export-driver oem#.inf D:\\Drivers-Backup<\/pre>\n
    Example:<\/strong><\/p>\n
    pnputil \/export-driver oem48.inf D:\\Drivers-Backup<\/pre>\n
    Editor’s note: PnpUtil.exe doesn’t seem to backup the PNF file for each driver. Whereas the PowerShell and DISM methods backup the PNF files.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Option 4: Using Driver Store Explorer<\/h3>\n
    Using Driver Store Explorer (free), you can export or uninstall the device driver packages.<\/p>\n
    Download Driver Store Explorer from GitHub:

    Run Driver Store Explorer. From the File menu, click “Export all drivers”. Choose a folder where you want the driver packages to be saved to.<\/p>\n

    Restoring the Drivers from Backup<\/h2>\n
    After clean installing Windows, to install the drivers for a device manually (or if Windows prompts you), try this:<\/p>\n
    Open Device Manager, right-click on a device, and click Update Driver Software.<\/p>\n

    Select the 2nd option, “Browse my computer for driver software.”<\/p>\n
    \"drivers<\/p>\n
    Mention the driver backup folder path.<\/p>\n
    \"drivers<\/p>\n
    Click Next, and Windows will automatically find and pick the required drivers in one of the subfolders if “Include subfolders” is enabled.<\/p>\n

    Additional Information<\/h3>\n
    Other than backing up your files and application-specific data files and settings, here are some additional steps to follow if you decide to clean-install Windows.<\/p>\n
      \n
    1. Keep the original software and driver installation CDs ready.<\/li>\n
    2. Perform a complete drive image backup, preferably to an external drive. This can be useful if you want to recover a file or customized settings that you may have missed earlier — files\/settings can be retrieved by mounting the backup image.<\/li>\n
    3. Backup your device drivers — if #1 above is impossible due to lost driver CDs or the manufacturer’s site no longer hosts the driver.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n
