Resetting default apps or reinstalling Chrome does not fix the issue.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>This issue happens if the &#8220;<strong>DefaultBrowserSettingEnabled<\/strong>&#8221; registry setting or its equivalent GPO &#8220;Set Google Chrome as Default Browser&#8221; has been enabled.<\/p>\n<p>The above policy setting makes Google Chrome always check whether it&#8217;s the default browser on startup and, if possible, automatically register itself. The registry entry\/GPO is valid only for legacy systems, especially Windows 7. They should <strong>not<\/strong> be used on higher systems like Windows 10 or 11.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, check out the official Chrome document titled <a href=\"https:\/\/chromeenterprise.google\/policies\/#DefaultBrowserSettingEnabled\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chrome Enterprise policy list and management<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To fix the issue, delete the &#8220;DefaultBrowserSettingEnabled&#8221; registry value or set the corresponding GPO to &#8220;Not configured&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> and run the following commands:<\/p>\n<p><em>(You may copy each command, paste it into the Command Prompt window, and press Enter.)<\/em><\/p>\n<pre>reg delete \"HKLM\\Software\\Policies\\Google\\Chrome\" \/v DefaultBrowserSettingEnabled \/f\r\n\r\nreg delete \"HKCU\\Software\\Policies\\Google\\Chrome\" \/v DefaultBrowserSettingEnabled \/f<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-38348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/chrome-default-gpo-remove.png\" alt=\"chrome check default browser startup - remove gpo registry\" width=\"752\" height=\"200\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\nIf you&#8217;ve used the local group policy editor (with the Google Chrome ADMX template) to enable the above setting, reverse the setting.
