However, when I run Disk Cleanup utility from within Vista Ultimate, it shows multiple 131GB options for me to clean up. After I clicked OK to clean up the selected entries, it erased everything on the 40GB partition. I then had to reinstall Windows Vista, but the problem seems to be recurring.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">(Information in this post applies to Windows Vista, 7 &amp; Windows 8 systems.)<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Windows Error Reporting Disk Cleanup handler<\/h3>\n<p>Having received three more such questions, I decided to work on this issue. Here is the screenshot of what Disk Cleanup displayed:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/cleanmgr_risk.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"391\" height=\"249\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fig 1:<\/strong> Disk Cleanup showing the list of files to delete.<\/p>\n<p>According to the above Disk Cleanup graphic, the Windows Error Reporting files constituted to <b>196 GB<\/b>, which is impossible in this case. I asked for the registry export of this key from the affected system:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\VolumeCaches<\/pre>\n<p>The above registry location contains the list of <a title=\"MSDN article for your reference\" href=\"http:\/\/msdn2.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/bb776782(VS.85).aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disk Cleanup handlers<\/a> and their registration information. When comparing the settings with my system, I noticed that a <b>really important<\/b> value named <strong>Folder<\/strong> was missing in each of the following subkeys under the <strong>VolumeCaches<\/strong> branch:<\/p>\n<p>|_ Windows Error Reporting Archive Files<br \/>\n|_ Windows Error Reporting Queue Files<br \/>\n|_ Windows Error Reporting System Archive Files<br \/>\n|_ Windows Error Reporting System Queue Files<\/p>\n<p>This paragraph from the MSDN documentation provides the description for the <b>Folder<\/b> registry value:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A specific folder or folders to search for items matching entries in the FileList value. You can specify wildcards using the ? or * characters. If the value is of type REG_SZ, multiple folder names are separated using the | character, without spaces on either side of it. If a CSIDL value is present, only one folder can be specified in this value. The location indicated by the CSIDL value is prepended to that folder path to compose a search path. For example, see the CSIDL value description. <u><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">If this value is absent, the root folder of the current volume is used. The DDEVCF_DOSUBDIRS flag is needed in that case to search the entire drive.<\/span><\/u><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Note the last line which states that the Disk Cleanup will recursively search the entire volume for the list of files mentioned in the FileList registry value (*.* wildcard used in this case) and include everything on the volume for deletion if the DDEVCF_DOSUBDIRS flag is enabled (which is <strong>enabled<\/strong> by default).<\/p>\n<h4>Fixing the Disk Cleanup WER Handlers<\/h4>\n<p>Available below are the REG files to fix the <b>Folder<\/b> registry values in each of the above registry keys, which resolved the issue indeed. This is what Disk Cleanup showed after running the fix:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/cleanmgr_fixed.gif\" alt=\"Disk Cleanup Problem\" width=\"393\" height=\"259\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Downloads<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/cleanmgrfix.zip\">cleanmgrfix.zip<\/a><\/b> for Windows Vista or 7<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/cleanmgrfix-w8-1.zip\">cleanmgrfix-w8-1.zip<\/a><\/b> for Windows 8<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/disk-cleanup-3-99-tb-bug-windows-update-cleanup\/\">Disk Cleanup Bug : 3.99 TB Used by Windows Updates<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Content Index Cleaner Disk Cleanup handler<\/h3>\n<p>Here is a similar case, but this time it&#8217;s the <strong>Content Index Cleaner<\/strong> Disk Cleanup handler.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of our readers asked:<\/strong><em> I have used a registry cleaner in my PC and I have exactly the same problem as mentioned in the blog post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/serious-disk-cleanup-problem-caused-by-broken-registration\/\">Serious Disk Cleanup problem caused by broken registration<\/a>. The Disk Cleanup program cleaned up everything including my Windows installation. Is there a fix?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After comparing the <b><em>VolumeCaches<\/em><\/b> branch which was sent to me by the asker, I narrowed down the issue to the following key:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\VolumeCaches\\Content Indexer Cleaner<\/pre>\n<p>In the above key, the value named <strong>Folder<\/strong> was missing. The <strong>Folder<\/strong> value should be present and have the following data:<\/p>\n<pre>?:\\Catalog.wci<\/pre>\n<p>As a result of the missing value, when you select the entry <b>Catalog files for the Content Indexer<\/b> in Disk Cleanup, files in the current partition is erased when Disk Cleanup is run as administrator.<\/p>\n<h4>Fixing the Disk Cleanup Content Index Cleaner handler<\/h4>\n<p>Here is a registry fix which reinstates the missing entry.<\/p>\n<pre>Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00\r\n\r\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Explorer\\VolumeCaches\\Content Indexer Cleaner]\r\n@=\"{A9B48EAC-3ED8-11d2-8216-00C04FB687DA}\"\r\n\"PropertyBag\"=\"{24400D16-5754-11d2-8218-00C04FB687DA}\"\r\n\"FileList\"=\"*.*\"\r\n\"Folder\"=\"?:\\\\Catalog.wci\"\r\n\"Flags\"=dword:00000141\r\n\"Priority\"=dword:0000012c<\/pre>\n<p>Copy the above lines to Notepad, and save it with a .reg extension. Right-click on the file and choose <b>Merge<\/b>. Click <b>Yes<\/b> when asked for confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>The above registry setting applies to all versions of Windows, including Windows 10 (tested up to version 1809.)<\/p>\n<h3>Closing Words<\/h3>\n<p>Although I could identify where the problem was, but had no clue on how the <b>Folders<\/b> value vanished in the first place. This may have been a result of running a registry cleaner. Always have an eye over the disk space showed near <b>Total amount of the disk space you gain:<\/b> in the Disk Cleanup window.<\/p>\n<p>But there is another complication; the user will never know what&#8217;s being deleted when running Disk Cleanup non-interactively &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/automatically-clear-temp-files-every-login-using-disk-cleanup-batch-file\/#cleanmgr\">by automating Disk Cleanup<\/a> or when Windows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/disk-cleanup-checkbox-options-default-enabled\/\">runs Disk Cleanup automatically<\/a> via Task Scheduler, using the <code>\/verylowdisk<\/code> switch.<\/p>\n<p>I hope this post helped you avert a major problem in your system.
