A note that reads &#8220;This extension is not from any known source, and may have been added without your knowledge.&#8221; appears at the bottom of the extension. The option to delete the extension is missing.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The above extension is installed by a crypto-malware that adds the <strong>ExtensionInstallForcelist<\/strong> and <strong>ExtensionInstallAllowlist<\/strong> registry-based policies to allow \/ force install the specific extension silently without user input.\u00a0The files related to the malware extension are stored in one or both of the following locations:<\/p>\n<pre>%LocalAppData%\\MicroApp\\\r\n\r\n%LocalAppData%\\ServiceApp\\\r\n\r\nC:\\apps-helper\\\r\n\r\nC:\\app.crx\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>FYI, here&#8217;s are the VirusTotal report for this (&#8220;macjkjgieeoakdlmmfefgmldohgddpkj&#8221;) malware:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virustotal.com\/gui\/file\/14c853a40f6e752de66dd981570cbfae5bb73728e2cb45e541d44f79e49d26a3\/detection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">14c853a40f6e752de66dd981570cbfae5bb73728e2cb45e541d44f79e49d26a3<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virustotal.com\/gui\/file\/a9d5c1acfe3af5f3ac2c4d7caf04da163b21a6f835ea0dfaf36a38b058e7f43e\/detection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a9d5c1acfe3af5f3ac2c4d7caf04da163b21a6f835ea0dfaf36a38b058e7f43e<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To remove the Edge\/Chrome Apps extension, try the following:<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Run Malwarebytes<\/h3>\n<p>Download Malwarebytes Antimalware from https:\/\/www.malwarebytes.com\/ and run a full scan.<\/p>\n<p>The tasks <code>MSEdgeUpdate<\/code> (and\/or <code>ChromeUpdate<\/code>) you see in the screenshot are rogue tasks. Eliminate all malware it finds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37791\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/edge-rogue-extension-apps-malwarebytes.png\" alt=\"chrome\/edge unremovable &quot;apps&quot; extension \" width=\"1184\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/edge-rogue-extension-apps-malwarebytes.png 1184w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/edge-rogue-extension-apps-malwarebytes-768x339.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1184px) 100vw, 1184px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Cleanup the tasks, registry settings, and the extension folder<\/h3>\n<p>Malwarebytes should have cleaned up the rogue tasks and the dropped malware files. Anyway, it&#8217;s a good idea to do the cleanup manually (in addition). extension \" width=\"750\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 3: Run the Farbar scanner.<\/h3>\n<p>If the problem persists, do the following:<\/p>\n<p>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bleepingcomputer.com\/download\/farbar-recovery-scan-tool\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Farbar Recovery Scan Tool<\/a> (FRST64.exe) from BleepingComputer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Run FRST64.exe and click &#8220;Scan&#8221;.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49719\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/frst-dashboard.png\" alt=\"Farbar scanner - FRST\" width=\"551\" height=\"348\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Upload the two logs, FRST.txt and Addition.txt, to your OneDrive and share the link here so that a <code>FixList.txt<\/code> can be prepared.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>(FRST64.exe doesn&#8217;t remove anything when you click &#8220;Scan.&#8221; It simply scans all the launch points, services, and drivers and lists them.
