It&#8217;s also helpful if you backup the Start menu tiles layout in Windows after customizing it, just in case your profile becomes corrupt at some point of time due to one reason or the other.<!--more--><\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<h4>Contents<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#backup_restore\">Backup &amp; Restore Windows 10\/11 Start Layout Manually<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#sordum_start_backup\">Automate using Start menu Backup &amp; Restore utility<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#older_versions\">Procedure for Older Windows 10 versions (v1607 &amp; earlier)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#where\">INFO: Where is the Start menu layout stored in Windows 10\/11?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#shortcuts\">Backing up the Start menu shortcuts (&#8220;All Apps&#8221; listing)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h2><a id=\"backup_restore\"><\/a>Backup &amp; Restore Start Layout<\/h2>\n<h3>Backup Windows 10 or 11 Start Layout<\/h3>\n<p>To back up Start menu tiles in Windows 10 (v1703 and higher &#8211; tested till 21H2) and Windows 11, use the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>) and go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\CloudStore\\Store\\Cache\\DefaultAccount<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9606\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/start-tiles-database-caches-registry.png\" alt=\"backup start tiles windows 10\" width=\"697\" height=\"273\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Export the key to a .reg file &#8212; eg., <code>D:\\Shell\\start_layout.reg<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you&#8217;re on Windows 11, there is an additional step to perform.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Open the following folder via the File Explorer Address bar or Run dialog:\n<pre>%LocalAppData%\\Packages\\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\\LocalState<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Copy the file named &#8220;<code>Start.bin<\/code>&#8221; from the above folder to the &#8220;<code>D:\\Shell\\<\/code>&#8221; folder.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Your Start menu tiles are now backed up.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Restore Windows 10 or 11 Start menu Tiles<\/h3>\n<p>To restore the Start tile layout to another user profile or computer, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p><em>The following assumes that the tile backup registry file is located at <code>D:\\Shell\\start_layout.reg<\/code><\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Log in to the user account where you want to apply the Start tile settings from the backup.<\/li>\n<li>Open a Command Prompt window.<\/li>\n<li>In the Command Prompt window, type the following commands and press <code>Enter<\/code> after each command:\n<pre>reg delete \"HKCU\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\CloudStore\\Store\\Cache\\DefaultAccount\" \/f\r\nreg import d:\\shell\\start_layout.reg<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re on Windows 11, you need to run an additional command, which is mentioned below:\n<pre>copy \"d:\\shell\\start.bin\" \"%LocalAppData%\\Packages\\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\\LocalState\\\" \/y<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">Restart the Explorer shell<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This starts the Explorer shell, and your Start tiles will now be refreshed.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3><a id=\"sordum_start_backup\"><\/a>Automate Using Backup &amp; Restore Start Layout utility<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sordum.org\/10997\/backup-start-menu-layout-v1-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Backup Start Menu Layout<\/a> can backup, restore or reset the Start menu layout for you in a single click. It works on Windows 10 v21H2 and Windows 11. Backup Start Menu Layout v1.5 has Windows 11 Support, wherein the tool backs up &#8220;start.bin&#8221; in addition.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9645\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/sordum-start-menu-backup.png\" alt=\"backup and restore start layout - sordum\" width=\"592\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Backup Start Menu Layout also supports the following command-line arguments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><code>\/C<\/code> : Create backup<\/li>\n<li><code>\/R<\/code> : Restore backup<\/li>\n<li><code>\/D<\/code> : Reset start menu layout<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<pre>BackupSML_x64.exe \/C\r\nBackupSML_x64.exe \/R BackupFolderPath\r\nBackupSML_x64.exe \/D<\/pre>\n<p>If you reset the Start menu layout using this tool, it repopulates the tiles using the Windows-default <code>DefaultLayouts.xml<\/code> file located in one of the following paths:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\Users\\%username%\\AppData\\local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Shell\\DefaultLayouts.xml\r\nC:\\Users\\Default\\AppData\\local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Shell\\DefaultLayouts.xml<\/pre>\n<p>And, after resetting, this is what the default Start menu looks like:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/sordum-start-menu-backup-reset.png\" alt=\"backup and restore start layout - sordum\" width=\"651\" height=\"681\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"batch_files\"><\/a>Automate Backup &amp; Restore using Batch files<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" \/>Use the <strong>StartTileBackup<\/strong> <code>Backup.bat<\/code> and <code>Restore.bat<\/code> Windows Batch files to automate the Windows 10 Start tiles backup and restore operations. For more information, see <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/TurboLabIt\/StartTileBackup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">StartTileBackup \u00b7 GitHub<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"older_versions\"><\/a>For Windows 10 v1607 and earlier<\/h3>\n<h4>Method 1: Backup Start menu tiles from another user account<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Create a new local administrator account, and then log off from your account.<\/li>\n<li>Log in to the newly created administrator account.<\/li>\n<li>Access the original user&#8217;s Start layout database folder, located here:\n<pre>C:\\Users\\{original-username}\\AppData\\Local\\TileDataLayer\\Database<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Copy the file <code>vedatamodel.edb<\/code> to a folder of your choice, and logoff from the second administrator account.<\/li>\n<li>Now, proceed to the <strong>last paragraph<\/strong> of this post <a href=\"#shortcuts\">Backing up the Start menu shortcuts (\u201cAll Apps\u201d listing)<\/a> to backup the Start menu shortcuts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Method 2: Backup Start menu tiles while logged in to the same profile<\/h4>\n<p>This method involves exiting the Explorer shell using Task Manager and then stopping a couple of services which have locked <code>vedatamodel.edb<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Terminate Explorer Shell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Start Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and switch to Details tab. Right-click each Explorer.exe process and click End task.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3684\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/backup-start-layout-windows-10-2.png\" alt=\"backup the start menu layout in windows 10\" width=\"650\" height=\"396\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Stop &#8220;State Repository&#8221; and &#8220;Tile Data model server&#8221; Services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the File menu, click Run new task. Type <b>services.msc<\/b> and press ENTER. This starts the Services Management Console.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3686\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/backup-start-layout-windows-10-0.png\" alt=\"backup start menu layout in windows 10\" width=\"650\" height=\"307\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Stop the &#8220;State Repository&#8221; service. It informs you that &#8220;Tile Data model server&#8221; Service will also be shut down. Click Yes to proceed<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3687\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/backup-start-layout-windows-10-1.png\" alt=\"backup start menu layout in windows 10\" width=\"650\" height=\"352\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Copy the Start layout database file using Command Prompt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using Task Manager, start Command Prompt (cmd.exe) and type the following commands in the Command Prompt window. Press ENTER after typing each command:<\/p>\n<pre>cd \/d %LocalAppData%\\TileDataLayer\\Database\r\ncopy *.edb %userprofile%\\desktop<\/pre>\n<p>You should see the output <b><i>&#8220;1 file(s) copied<\/i><\/b>&#8220;. The file should database file is now copied to the desktop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Restart the Explorer Shell<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From Task Manager, create a new explorer.exe process.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/backup-start-layout-windows-10-3.png\" alt=\"backup windows 10 start screen layout\" width=\"650\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This also restarts the two services which you stopped earlier.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h3><a id=\"where\"><\/a>Where are the Start menu pinned items stored in Windows 10?<\/h3>\n<p>In Windows 10 v1703 and higher, the Start tiles configuration is stored in the following registry key:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\CloudStore<\/pre>\n<p>And the tiles cache is stored in database files in the following folder:<\/p>\n<pre>%LocalAppData%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Caches<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9605\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/start-tiles-database-caches-folder.png\" alt=\"backup start tiles windows 10\" width=\"699\" height=\"261\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The file names look like the following &#8212; containing GUID string in the file names:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>{3DA71D5A-20CC-432F-A115-DFE92379E91F}.3.ver0x0000000000000094.db<\/li>\n<li>{102190F8-B905-4D30-88C9-B63C603DA134}.3.ver0x0000000000000001.db<\/li>\n<li>{AFBF9F1A-8EE8-4C77-AF34-C647E37CA0D9}.1.ver0x0000000000000013.db<\/li>\n<li>{AFBF9F1A-8EE8-4C77-AF34-C647E37CA0D9}.1.ver0x0000000000000014.db<\/li>\n<li>cversions.1.db<\/li>\n<li>cversions.3.db<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/find-windows-10-build-version-edition-bit\/\">How to Find Your Windows 10 Build Number, Version, Edition and Bitness<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<h4>For versions older than v1703<\/h4>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/find-windows-10-build-version-edition-bit\/\">Windows 10 versions<\/a> older than v1703 the &#8220;TileDataLayer&#8221; database model was used. Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4014193\/features-that-are-removed-or-deprecated-in-windows-10-creators-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">deprecated<\/a> the &#8220;TileDataLayer&#8221; model in the Windows 10 1703 Creators Update. In older versions, the\u00a0Windows 10 Start screen configuration was stored in a database file named <code>vedatamodel.edb<\/code> in a subfolder under the <code>%LocalAppData%<\/code> folder.
