This article tells you how to bring the &#8220;Text Document&#8221; option back.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Restore Missing &#8220;Text Document&#8221; to the New menu<\/h2>\n<p>To add &#8220;Text Document&#8221; to the New menu, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start Regedit.exe and go to:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\.txt<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create a subkey named &#8220;ShellNew&#8221; if it doesn&#8217;t already exist.<\/li>\n<li>Select the &#8220;ShellNew&#8221; key and create the following string values (REG_SZ) in the right pane.\n<pre>\"NullFile\"\r\n\r\n\"ItemName\"<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Leave the data for <strong>NullFile<\/strong> empty.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click <strong>ItemName<\/strong> and set &#8220;Text Document&#8221; as its value data.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Log off and log back in for the changes to take effect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>REG file to automate the above settings<\/h4>\n<p>To automate the above steps, download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/txt_shellnew_windows_11.zip\">txt_shellnew_windows_11.reg<\/a>\u00a0and run it.<\/p>\n<p>FYI, here&#8217;s what the REG file contains:<\/p>\n<pre>Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00\r\n\r\n[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\.txt\\ShellNew]\r\n\r\n[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\.txt\\ShellNew]\r\n\"NullFile\"=\"\"\r\n\"ItemName\"=\"Text Document\"<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/new-menu-restore-default-items-shellnew\/\">Restore Default Items to the New Menu<\/a><\/div>\n<h3>Uninstall and Reinstall Notepad<\/h3>\n<p>If the above registry edit doesn&#8217;t help, try uninstalling Notepad using PowerShell and reinstalling it via Microsoft Store.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From admin PowerShell, run the following command:\n<pre class=\"powershell\">Get-AppXPackage Microsoft.WindowsNotepad -allusers | remove-appxpackage -allusers<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Open Microsoft Store, search for <strong>Windows Notepad<\/strong> and install it.\n<pre>Windows Notepad - Microsoft Store Apps: https:\/\/apps.microsoft.com\/store\/detail\/windows-notepad\/9MSMLRH6LZF3<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You should now see the &#8220;Text Document&#8221; entry in the New menu.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you right-click on the desktop and click &#8220;New,&#8221; the New menu may not contain the &#8220;Text Document&#8221; option on your Windows 11 computer.
