After 5 minutes or so, the following error appears:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\"><strong>Couldn't Mount File<\/strong>\r\n\r\nSorry, there was a problem mounting the file.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33543\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/iso-mount-error.png\" alt=\"cannot mount iso\" width=\"352\" height=\"125\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Note: If you receive a different error message (&#8220;You don&#8217;t have permission to mount the file&#8221;), it&#8217;s a different issue. See the Microsoft Docs <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/MicrosoftDocs\/SupportArticles-docs\/blob\/main\/support\/windows-server\/backup-and-storage\/you-dont-have-permission-error-mount-iso-image.md\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">GitHub article<\/a> for the fix.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The above error occurs if CDROM filter driver is referenced in the registry, but the driver file is missing. This prevents the ISO images from being mounted.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the issue, delete the third-party filter driver references for the CDROM class from the Windows registry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<strong>Important:<\/strong> Before proceeding, please create a backup of your registry hives using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/automatically-backup-registry-hives-windows-10\/#regbak_utility\">Acelogix RegBak<\/a> or a similar tool.\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following location:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Class\\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Delete the two values, namely &#8220;LowerFilters&#8221; and &#8220;UpperFilters&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows and see if you&#8217;re able to mount ISO images.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Additional Information<\/h3>\n<p>For example, the above error may occur after deleting the PxHlpa64.sys driver and its service registration to enable the Memory Integrity feature. However, the LowerFilters or UpperFilters registry entry is usually left over after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/driver-uninstall-completely-windows\/\">deleting the service<\/a>.
