The full error message is mentioned below.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool\r\n\r\n[== 3.8% ]\r\n\r\nError: 1392\r\nThe file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.\r\n\r\nThe DISM log file can be found at C:\\WINDOWS\\Logs\\DISM\\dism.log<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/dism-error-1392.png\" alt=\"dism error 1392\" width=\"600\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And if you attempt to run the System File Checker, it shows the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">C:\\Windows\\System32&gt;sfc \/scannow\r\n\r\nBeginning system scan. This process will take some time.\r\n\r\nBeginning verification phase of system scan.\r\n\r\nWindows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.<\/pre>\n<p>In some cases, you see the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service<\/pre>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-resource-protection-could-not-start-repair-service\/\">SFC Error: Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The error code 1392 (&#8220;ERROR_FILE_CORRUPT&#8221;) means &#8220;The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.&#8221; DISM may have encountered the corrupt file when repairing the component store (i.e., the &#8220;WinSxS&#8221; directory.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hint:<\/strong> To see the corrupted file or folder name(s), inspect CBS.log and look for the &#8220;STATUS_FILE_CORRUPT_ERROR&#8221; entries. Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<pre>Error CSI 0000004b (F) STATUS_FILE_CORRUPT_ERROR #4574035# from Windows::Rtl::SystemImplementation::DirectFileSystemProvider::SysCreateFile(flags = (AllowFileNotFound|0x00000100), handle = {provider=NULL, handle=0, name= (\"null\")}, da = (SYNCHRONIZE|FILE_READ_ATTRIBUTES), oa = @0x496c3fb890-&gt;OBJECT_ATTRIBUTES {s:48; rd:NULL; on:[97]'\\SystemRoot\\WinSxS\\amd64_dual_wgencounter.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22621.1_none_dd47d90ab31c1724'; a:(OBJ_CASE_INSENSITIVE)}, iosb = @0x496c3fb8f0, as = (null), fa = 0, sa = (FILE_SHARE[gle=0xd0000102]<\/pre>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To repair the DISM error 1392, fix the file system errors by running Chkdsk (thorough) or the Disk Error checking tool on the system drive.<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Chkdsk<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open an admin Command Prompt and run the following command:\n<pre>chkdsk c: \/r<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32020\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/run-chkdsk-c-drive.png\" alt=\"run chkdsk on system drive\" width=\"699\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\"><code>\/r<\/code> Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. The disk must be locked. \/r includes the functionality of \/f, with the additional analysis of physical disk errors.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Press <strong>Y<\/strong> when you see the following message:\n<pre>The type of the file system is NTFS.\r\nCannot lock current drive.\r\n\r\nChkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another\r\nprocess. Would you like to schedule this volume to be\r\nchecked the next time the system restarts? (Y\/N)<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows and let Chkdsk auto-launch at startup.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>If the issue persists, you may need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-device-harddisk-dr0-has-a-bad-block-error-in-event-viewer\/\">diagnose your hard disk<\/a> drive thoroughly.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Option 2: Disk Error Checker<\/h3>\n<p>Running the disk error-checking tool (an alternative solution to Chkdsk) may also fix the issue without requiring a reboot.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">However, this method might be equivalent to <code>chkdsk \/f<\/code>, which is not as thorough as <code>chkdsk \/r<\/code>.<\/div>\n<ol>\n<li>Open File Explorer \u2192 This PC<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the C: drive and click Properties<\/li>\n<li>Click Tools \u2192 click on the &#8220;Check&#8221; button.<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;<strong>Scan drive<\/strong>&#8221; and complete the procedure.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/disk-error-checking-tools.png\" alt=\"disk error check tools\" width=\"542\" height=\"231\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the Error Checking tool finds some file system errors and prompts to fix them, follow the onscreen instructions and let the tool rectify the errors.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Option 3: Delete the affected file\/folder manually.<\/h3>\n<p>Take ownership of the affected file\/folders(s) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-take-ownership-of-registry-keys-and-assign-full-permissions\/\">using Takeown.exe<\/a> and delete the corrupted files.<\/p>\n<p>Replace those files\/folders from another computer or the Windows ISO.<\/p>\n<p>Re-run DISM to verify if the component store has no issues.<\/p>\n<p>That should resolve the DISM error 1392 and SFC errors.
