When you open the Services MMC, the Windows Modules Installer Service (“TrustedInstaller”) service may be missing from the list.<\/p>\n

On some systems, the Windows Modules Installer service may exist, but attempting to start the service causes error 3.<\/p>\n

Windows could not start the Windows Modules Installer service on Local Computer.\r\n\r\nError 3: The system cannot find the path specified.<\/pre>\n
As a result, you’re unable to run DISM<\/a> or SFC<\/a>. Also, you may be unable to reinstall Windows due to this issue.<\/p>\n
Cause<\/h2>\n
The above issues occur if the Windows Modules Installer service registration has been corrupted.<\/p>\n
Resolution<\/h2>\n
The Windows Modules Installer service can be fixed by starting Regedit.exe<\/code> under the LocalSystem account. Follow these steps:<\/p>\n
    \n
  1. Download TrustedInstaller_service.zip<\/a>, unzip, and extract the file(s) to the desktop. The archive contains two files, TRUSTEDINSTALLER (Windows 10).reg and TRUSTEDINSTALLER (Windows 11).reg for Windows 10 and 11, respectively.<\/li>\n
  2. Start Regedit.exe (c:\\windows\\regedit.exe<\/code>) under the LocalSystem (“SYSTEM”) account. To do so, use one of the methods discussed in this article, How to Run a Program as SYSTEM (LocalSystem)<\/a><\/li>\n
  3. In the Registry Editor window, click on the File menu, and choose Import…\"Regedit.exe<\/li>\n
  4. Browse and select the TrustedInstaller registry file which you downloaded earlier, and import it.<\/li>\n
  5. Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n
  6. Restart Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
    The Windows Modules Installer service should show up in the Services MMC and start correctly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
