{"id":31313,"date":"2022-12-27T13:17:44","date_gmt":"2022-12-27T07:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=31313"},"modified":"2022-12-27T13:30:28","modified_gmt":"2022-12-27T08:00:28","slug":"windows-update-service-access-denied-startup-type","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-update-service-access-denied-startup-type\/","title":{"rendered":"Windows Update Service &#8220;Access is Denied&#8221; When Changing Startup Type"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you open the Services MMC and change the Windows Update service&#8217;s startup type, the &#8220;Access is denied&#8221; error occurs after clicking Apply or OK.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wu-access-denied-error.png\" alt=\"windows update service options grayed out - wuauserv\" width=\"853\" height=\"590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wu-access-denied-error.png 853w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/wu-access-denied-error-768x531.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 853px) 100vw, 853px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The above error occurs due to tightened permissions for the Windows Update service&#8217;s registry key(s).<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the issue, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-take-ownership-of-registry-keys-and-assign-full-permissions\/\">change ownership<\/a> of the &#8220;wuauserv&#8221; registry key and assign the correct permissions.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and go to:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\wuauserv<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Right-click <code>wuauserv<\/code> and click Permissions&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Click Advanced.<\/li>\n<li>In the Advanced Security Settings dialog, note down the <strong>owner<\/strong>. If &#8220;Administrators&#8221; is not the current owner (or if it says &#8220;Unable to display current owner&#8221;), click Change.<\/li>\n<li>In the &#8220;Select Users or Groups&#8221; dialog, type <strong>administrators<\/strong> and click OK.<\/li>\n<li>Click Replace owner on subcontainers and objects, and then click <strong>Apply<\/strong>. Don&#8217;t close the dialog yet.\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/wuauserv-registry-ownership-change.png\" alt=\"wuauserv registry change ownership\" width=\"700\" height=\"263\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31315\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Make sure that the Permission entries are as shown in the dialog below. Importantly, <strong>Administrators<\/strong>, <strong>CREATOR OWNER<\/strong>, and <strong>SYSTEM<\/strong> have <strong>Full Control<\/strong> Permissions. Note that all of the permission entries are <strong>inherited<\/strong> from the parent.
