(0x8004230f)<\/pre>\n<p>The error <code>8004230F<\/code> &#8220;VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR&#8221; is a VSS error (instead of an activation error code). The error occurs because the upgrade process cannot create a Restore Point. Here&#8217;s the corresponding event log entry:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Log Name:      Application\r\nSource:        System Restore\r\nDate:          \r\nEvent ID:      8193\r\nTask Category: None\r\nLevel:         Error\r\nKeywords:      Classic\r\nUser:          N\/A\r\nComputer:      VOSTRO-3470\r\nDescription:\r\nFailed to create restore point (Process = C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\SystemSettingsAdminFlows.exe EnterProductKey; Description = Upgrade your edition of Windows; Error = 0x8004230f).\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>To fix the issue, follow the steps in the &#8220;Resolution&#8221; section below. It should restore the System Restore functionality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> As a workaround, you can disable System Restore to let the upgrade process complete successfully.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Running the <strong>vssadmin list volumes<\/strong> command-line may throw the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">(IVssSnapshotProvider::IsVolumeSupported() failed with 0x8000ffff [hr = 0x8000ffff f, Catastrophic failure]).<\/pre>\n<p>When the above symptoms occur, third-party shadow copy tools, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/recover-files-previous-versions-shadow-copy-windows-7-vista\/\">Shadow Explorer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/shadowcopyview-recover-files-volume-shadow-snapshot\/\">ShadowCopyView<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/previousfilesrecovery-search-recover-files-shadow-copy\/\">PreviousFilesRecovery<\/a>, will not work.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The above issue happens if an uninstaller has deleted the <code>UpperFilters<\/code> registry value under the Storage Volume Class GUID. The registry value should have <code><strong>volsnap<\/strong><\/code> as the value data.\u00a0Kaspersky&#8217;s Antivirus uninstaller tool and AOMEI Backupper are known to cause this issue.<\/p>\n<p>This error can also happen if one or more of the following services are disabled:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Volume Shadow Copy ( vss)<\/li>\n<li>Virtual Disk (vds)<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider (swprv)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another possible root cause is the presence of the following registry key:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\MiniNT<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> The above key makes that system think that you&#8217;re currently running Windows PE. The above registry key causes the following problems:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-dism-error-50-minint-windows-pe-servicing\/\">DISM Error 50 or Error 87: &#8220;DISM does not support servicing Windows PE&#8221;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/setup-inplace-upgrade-language-screen\/\">Windows Setup: Language Selection Screen Appears During In-Place Upgrade<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To fix the System Restore and VSS error 0x81000203, follow the steps below:<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Reconfigure the services<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Right-click Start, and click Run.<\/li>\n<li>Type <strong>Services.msc<\/strong> and click OK.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click &#8220;<strong>Volume Shadow Copy<\/strong>&#8221; and set its start type to <strong>Manual<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click Start to manually start the service. Note down the error message, if any.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click &#8220;<strong>Virtual Disk<\/strong>&#8221; and set its start type to <strong>Manual<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click Start to manually start the service. Note down the error message, if any.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click &#8220;<strong>Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider<\/strong>&#8221; and set its start type to <strong>Automatic (delayed start)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click Start to start the service manually if it&#8217;s not running. Note down the error message, if any.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Services console.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> Some viruses delete the &#8220;Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider&#8221; (swprv) service and delete all volume shadow copies from the computer. If so, you must restore the missing service by running the registry file <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/SWPRV.zip\">SWPRV.REG<\/a>. After applying the file, reboot Windows.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> Default services configuration for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-default-services-configuration\/\">Windows 10<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-11-default-services-configuration\/\">Windows 11<\/a>.<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Restore the UpperFilters registry value.<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Start Regedit.exe and go to:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Class\\{71a27cdd-812a-11d0-bec7-08002be2092f}<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create a new REG_MULTI_SZ value named <code><strong>UpperFilters<\/strong><\/code><\/li>\n<li>Double-click UpperFilters.<\/li>\n<li>In the Value data field, type <strong>volsnap<\/strong> and click OK.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31269\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-restore-0x81000203-4.png\" alt=\"system restore 0x81000203 - upperfilters\" width=\"350\" height=\"321\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click OK when you see the following message:\n<pre>Warning\r\n\r\nData of type REG_MULTI_SZ cannot contain empty strings.\r\nRegistry Editor will remove all empty strings found.<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the value\/data looks like this:<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31271\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/system-restore-0x81000203-3.png\" alt=\"system restore 0x81000203 - upperfilters\" width=\"732\" height=\"310\" \/>Note: If the UpperFilters value exists and contains additional value data, delete the additional data and type <strong>volsnap<\/strong>. Third-party backup utilities or antivirus programs add additional drivers in the UpperFilters value. For example, AOMEI Backupper software adds the entry <strong>ambakdrv<\/strong> (driver file name ambakdrv.sys) in the UpperFilters registry value. Deleting the additional entries should resolve the issue.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor and <strong>restart<\/strong> Windows. Shutting down and powering On the unit may not help. Please <strong>reboot<\/strong> Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>GUID Info<\/h4>\n<pre>Storage Volumes\r\nClass = Volume\r\nClassGuid = {71a27cdd-812a-11d0-bec7-08002be2092f}<\/pre>\n<p>This class includes storage volumes as defined by the system-supplied logical volume manager and class drivers that create device objects to represent storage volumes, such as the system disk class driver.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 3: Delete the &#8220;MiniNT&#8221; registry key<\/h3>\n<p>If the above steps do not fix the issue, then do the following:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start Regedit.exe and go to the following key <strong>(if it exists)<\/strong>:\n<pre class=\"registry\">HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\MiniNT<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Right-click &#8220;MiniNT&#8221; and choose Delete.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That should fix the System Protection settings dialog and the Volume Shadow Copy feature in Windows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you open the System Properties dialog (sysdm.cpl) and click System Protection, the error 0x81000203 occurs.
