The following is the error message verbatim:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">The service has not been started.\r\n\r\nError code: Wsl\/Service\/CreateInstance\/CreateVm\/ConfigureNetworking\/0x80070426<\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31062\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/wsl-0x80070426-dns.png\" alt=\"wsl error 0x80070426 dns client service not started\" width=\"650\" height=\"185\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, the list of distros is correctly displayed when you run the <code><strong>wsl -l -v<\/strong><\/code> command.<\/p>\n<pre>NAME STATE VERSION\r\n\r\n* Ubuntu Stopped 2<\/pre>\n<p>When you install a Linux distribution (e.g., Ubuntu) or run it, a similar error occurs:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Installing, this may take a few minutes...\r\nWslRegisterDistribution failed with error: 0x80070426\r\nError: 0x80070426 The service has not been started.<\/pre>\n<p>(or)<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.\r\nError code: Wsl\/Service\/CreateInstance\/CreateVm\/ConfigureNetworking\/0x8007041d\r\nPress any key to continue...<\/pre>\n<p>The issue occurs even though the &#8220;Hyper-V Host Compute Service&#8221; (<code>vmcompute<\/code>) service is running.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The error code <code>0x80070426<\/code> (&#8220;<code>ERROR_SERVICE_NOT_ACTIVE<\/code>&#8220;) means &#8220;The service has not been started.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The error code <code>0x8007041D<\/code> (&#8220;<code>ERROR_SERVICE_REQUEST_TIMEOUT<\/code>&#8220;) means &#8220;The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The above errors occur if the DNS Client Service is disabled or in a pending start state.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wsl-no-installed-distributions-error\/\">Windows Subsystem for Linux has no installed distributions<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the WSL error <code>0x80070426<\/code>, set the DNS Client service startup type to Automatic.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Services\\Dnscache<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click &#8220;<strong>Start<\/strong>&#8221; and set its data to <strong>2<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>After the restart, the DNS Client service should start correctly.
