In some cases, malware could be the root cause.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You may be unable to run any program elevated if your user account has become a standard or a guest account and no other admin account exists on the system. The <strong>Yes<\/strong> button in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-yes-button-uac-dialog-grayed-disabled-user-account-control\/\">UAC dialog will be missing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This means you can&#8217;t return to the User Account settings page and set yourself as the administrator.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is a simple trick to regain the lost administrator rights for your account!<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p><strong>Have you lost the account password? It&#8217;s a different issue.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9189\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/information-icon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"32\" height=\"32\" \/>If you have forgotten the passwords for the built-in administrator and the user accounts and cannot log in, this article doesn&#8217;t apply. The article addresses the &#8220;lost admin rights&#8221; issue, and the linked article above addresses the &#8220;lost password&#8221; issue.)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<h3>Fix your account using built-in Administrator via Safe mode<\/h3>\n<p>Log in to the built-in Administrator account via Safe Mode and then promote your user account to an administrator. The built-in <strong>Administrator<\/strong> account password has a <strong>blank<\/strong> password by default. However, if you have set a password earlier, this method assumes you remember the &#8220;Administrator&#8221; account password.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6338 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" \/>The built-in &#8220;Administrator&#8221; account shows up on the sign-in screen while in Safe Mode if <strong>no other<\/strong> administrator account user exists on the computer; it doesn&#8217;t matter whether the &#8220;Administrator&#8221; account is active or not.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<ol>\n<li>Click Start, click the Power button, press and hold the <kbd>Shift<\/kbd> key down, and click Restart. This starts the Windows Recovery Environment.\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>For other methods to access WinRE, see the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/access-windows-recovery-environment\/\">How to access Windows Recovery Environment<\/a>.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>In Windows RE, click Troubleshoot \u2192 Advanced options \u2192 Startup Settings.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/winre%20(1).png\" width=\"600\" height=\"464\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/winre%20(2).png\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33363\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/winre_startup_settings.png\" alt=\"windows RE startup settings\" width=\"600\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In Startup Settings, press the <kbd><strong>4<\/strong><\/kbd> or <kbd><strong>F4<\/strong><\/kbd> button on your keyboard.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24085 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/winre-startup-settings.png\" alt=\"windows re startup settings\" width=\"600\" height=\"483\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Windows will now restart in Safe Mode.<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Administrator&#8221; and sign in to the account. Then, follow one of the following methods.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 1: Using Command Prompt<\/h4>\n<p>Open Command Prompt, and use the following command-line syntax:<\/p>\n<pre>net localgroup administrators {username} \/add<\/pre>\n<p>Example: If the username is <code>RobertM<\/code>, run this command:<\/p>\n<pre>net localgroup administrators RobertM \/add<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6029\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/w10-fix-group-membership-admin-2.png\" alt=\"make user account administrator group membership net localgroup\" width=\"700\" height=\"178\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This makes the RobertM account an administrator account.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 2: Using Netplwiz.exe<\/h4>\n<p>You can view and change the group membership of accounts by running the <code>netplwiz.exe<\/code> or <code>control userpasswords2<\/code> command from the Run dialog.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6032 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/w10-fix-group-membership-admin-1.png\" alt=\"make user account administrator group membership net localgroup\" width=\"463\" height=\"510\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To fix the user account group membership and <strong>make it an administrator<\/strong>, from the user accounts dialog shown above:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select your account \u2192 Properties \u2192 Group Membership \u2192 <strong>Administrator<\/strong> \u2192 OK.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8829\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/user-account-lost-admin-rights-standard-2.png\" alt=\"lost administrator rights - standard user to administrator - userpasswords2\" width=\"460\" height=\"502\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Close and reopen the <code>control userpasswords2<\/code> dialog. You&#8217;ll see that the account <code>RobertM<\/code> , in this example, is made an administrator.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6030\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/w10-fix-group-membership-admin-3.png\" alt=\"make user account administrator group membership net localgroup\" width=\"463\" height=\"510\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Restart Windows and log in to the user account.
