On affected devices, Task Manager should function as expected, but some parts of the UI might not be readable.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30481\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/taskbar-display-unreadable.png\" alt=\"task manager display unreadable KB5020044\" width=\"756\" height=\"389\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You might be affected by this issue if you have &#8220;Choose your mode&#8221; set to &#8220;Custom&#8221; in the Personalization \u2192 Colors section of Settings.<\/p>\n<p>If you are using Dark or Light for the &#8220;Choose your mode&#8221; setting, you should not be affected by this issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Steps to reproduce the problem<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Personalize \u2192 Colors window, select &#8220;Custom&#8221;<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Set your default Windows mode to &#8220;Dark&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">Set your default app mode to &#8220;Light&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(or)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set your default Windows mode to &#8220;Light&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Set your default app mode to &#8220;Dark&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[Version 22H2 OS Build 22621.900]<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>UPDATE (December 13, 2022): The Cumulative Update <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/december-13-2022-kb5021255-os-build-22621-963-8286ffb4-d1a6-4510-b637-5414e64d7da3\">KB5021255<\/a> (OS Build 22621.963) <strong>resolves<\/strong> this issue!<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><em>This update addresses a known issue that might affect Task Manager. It might display certain elements in the user interface (UI) in unexpected colors. Some parts of the UI might not be readable. This issue might occur if you have &#8220;Choose your mode&#8221; set to &#8220;Custom&#8221; in the Personalization &gt; Colors section of Settings.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Workaround<\/h3>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t want to uninstall the KB5020044 update, follow one of the workarounds.<\/p>\n<h4>Option 1<\/h4>\n<p>To workaround this issue, you can change the \u201cChoose your mode\u201d setting to \u201cDark\u201d or \u201cLight\u201d until Microsoft addresses this issue.<\/p>\n<p>To do this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open Settings, select Personalize and select Colors.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: inherit;\">For Choose your mode, select Dark or Light.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>(Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. <\/em><em>See paragraph &#8220;Task Manager might not display in expected colors&#8221; in the <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/release-health\/status-windows-11-22h2#task-manager-might-not-display-in-expected-colors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Windows 11, version 22H2 known issues and notifications<\/a> webpage.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Option 2: Revert to the earlier Taskmgr.exe version<\/h4>\n<p>The earlier version of Taskmgr.exe (10.0.22621.608) doesn&#8217;t have this issue. You can download the version from the following link:<\/p>\n<pre>https:\/\/msdl.microsoft.com\/download\/symbols\/taskmgr.exe\/D5F55D6F2f4000\/taskmgr.exe\r\n\r\nSHA256: dc8e8f54744a7f1887f4ecc712f16eb3156f6e420df781774a3a8b9328b86fca<\/pre>\n<p><strong>Instructions<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The above file will download as a .blob file. Rename it to <code>Taskmgr.exe<\/code> after downloading it.<\/li>\n<li>Open a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-trustedinstaller-locked-registry-keys-files\/#advancedrun\">Trusted Installer Command Prompt<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Rename <code>c:\\windows\\system32\\taskmgr.exe<\/code> to <code>taskmgr.exe.old<\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>Copy the downloaded <code>Taskmgr.exe<\/code> to the System32 directory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: However, if you run the &#8220;Sfc \/scannow&#8221; command in the future, it will restore the latest version of Taskmgr.exe.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After installing the KB5020044 update for Windows 11, Task Manager might display certain elements in the user interface (UI) in unexpected colors.
