To see the current tasks, click Refresh.Task &lt;task name&gt;: The task image is corrupt or has been tampered with.<\/div>\n<p>Here is a case where the built-in task <code>CreateChoiceProcessTask<\/code> has become corrupted for some reason, and showing up the error.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/task_corrupt_1.png\" alt=\"task_corrupt_1\" width=\"469\" height=\"165\" \/><\/p>\n<p><small>Fig 1: The selected task &#8220;CreateChoiceProcessTask&#8221; no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh.<\/small><\/p>\n<p>Also, this error may be recorded in the event log under <code>Event ID 414<\/code>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">Task Scheduler service found a misconfiguration in the <u>NT TASK\\CreateChoiceProcessTask<\/u> definition.<br \/>\nAdditional Data: Error Value: C:\\Windows\\System32\\browserchoice.exe.<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/task_corrupt_3.png\" width=\"536\" height=\"529\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This article explains how to fix the error &#8220;<strong><em>The selected task &#8216;Name&#8217; no longer exists<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; in Task Scheduler.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/event-id-414-task-misconfiguration-event-log\/\">How to Fix Event ID 414 Task Misconfiguration Errors in System Event Log<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>Error <strong>&#8220;The selected task &#8216;Name&#8217; no longer exists&#8221;<\/strong> occurs if the scheduled task registry entry gets corrupt or the entry is an leftover after the related program is uninstalled.\u00a0When a task gets corrupt, in most cases you may need to edit the registry to fix it, as <code>SchTasks.exe<\/code> or third-party tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/clean-boot-windows-autoruns\/\">Autoruns<\/a> wouldn&#8217;t list the corrupt task.<\/p>\n<h2>Fix &#8220;The Selected Task No longer exists&#8221; in Task Scheduler<\/h2>\n<p>Here is how to fix the &#8220;The Selected Task &#8216;Name&#8217; No longer exists&#8221; error when starting Task Scheduler:<\/p>\n<h3>Method 1: Delete the Task Using SchTasks<\/h3>\n<p>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">Admin Command Prompt window<\/a> and type:<\/p>\n<pre>schtasks \/delete \/TN &lt;task name&gt;<\/pre>\n<p>In this example, you would be typing:<\/p>\n<pre>schtasks \/delete \/TN \"CreateChoiceProcessTask\"<\/pre>\n<p>If you get the following error, then you need to edit the registry as explained in <strong>Method 2<\/strong> below, to remove the corrupted task.<\/p>\n<div class=\"err\">ERROR: The specified task name &#8220;CreateChoiceProcessTask&#8221; does not exist in the system.<\/div>\n<h3>Method 2:\u00a0Delete the Task Using Registry Editor<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/create-restore-protection-point-rollback-windows\/\">System Restore Point<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Start <code>Regedit.exe<\/code> and go to the following key:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Schedule\\TaskCache\\Tree<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Use the Find option to search for the task name (eg. &#8220;<code>CreateChoiceProcessTask<\/code>&#8220;) want to remove. It will be under one of the sub-folders under Tree, or immediately under &#8220;Tree&#8221; depending upon where the task was originally created.<\/li>\n<li>Note down the GUID string in the right-pane, specified for the value named <code><strong>Id<\/strong><\/code>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3008\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/task_corrupt_2.png\" alt=\"task_corrupt_2\" width=\"590\" height=\"220\" \/><br \/>\n<i>GUID string in this example is <code>{1336CAA8-3056-44E8-A14B-71ECDA26EC95}<\/code>. This is generated randomly when creating a Task.. so it&#8217;s <strong><u>NOT<\/u><\/strong> the same GUID in every system. Note down this string in Notepad.<\/i><\/li>\n<li>Right-click the branch <strong>CreateChoiceProcessTask<\/strong> and choose Delete<\/li>\n<li>Then delete the GUID string subkey you noted earlier, from the following keys:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Schedule\\TaskCache\\Boot\r\n(or)\r\nHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Schedule\\TaskCache\\Logon\r\n(or)\r\nHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Schedule\\TaskCache\\Maintenance\r\n(or)\r\nHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Schedule\\TaskCache\\Plain\r\n\r\n(<strong>and<\/strong>)\r\n\r\nHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Schedule\\TaskCache\\Tasks<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Delete the Task File<\/h3>\n<p>After completing the steps in Method 1 or Method 2, open File Explorer and browse <code>C:\\Windows\\System32\\Tasks<\/code> folder. Search for the file <code>CreateChoiceProcessTask<\/code> (same as the task name displayed in the error message dialog), and delete the file if found. The file might be present in the <code>Tasks<\/code> folder or in one of the sub-folders depending up where the task was originally created.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it!
