Over 200 services are disabled in that mode.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75625\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/msconfig-diagnostic-startup.png\" alt=\"msconfig diagnostic startup - pin sign-in error\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After enabling the Diagnostic Startup mode in the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) and rebooting, you may be unable to sign in to your account using your PIN.\u00a0The following error appears on the sign-in screen:<!--more--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Something happened and your PIN isn't available.\n\nClick to set up your PIN again.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75624\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/msconfig-diagnostic-startup-pin-error.png\" alt=\"msconfig diagnostic startup - pin sign-in error\" width=\"750\" height=\"455\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you click &#8220;Set up my PIN&#8221;, the following error occurs:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Search for app in the Store?\n\nYou need to install an app for this task.\n\nWould you like to search for one in the Store?<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75623\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/msconfig-diagnostic-startup-pin-error-2.png\" alt=\"msconfig diagnostic startup - pin sign-in error\" width=\"751\" height=\"270\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, as the option to sign in using the password (the &#8220;Sign-in options&#8221; link) is missing, you cannot log in to your user account.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The issue happens because the Diagnostic startup mode turns off 200+ services. Selecting &#8220;Diagnostic Startup&#8221; in MSCONFIG and rebooting loads Windows with the bare minimum set of drivers and services. PIN sign-in requires a particular set of services to be enabled. As the services needed to process your PIN input are disabled, you get the above error.<\/p>\n<p>The password sign-in option may not be available because the following option is enabled.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29326\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pin-sign-in-hello.png\" alt=\"pin sign-in and diagnostic startup error\" width=\"510\" height=\"322\" \/><\/p>\n<pre>For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device<\/pre>\n<p>Note that the Windows 11 setup forces you to create a Microsoft Account and automatically enables the above Windows Hello sign-in option.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6338 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/icotip.gif\" alt=\"tips bulb icon\" width=\"34\" height=\"34\" \/>If you&#8217;re asked to boot into Diagnostic mode to solve a problem in the future, first turn off the above Windows Hello sign-in option via Settings. That way, you can still log in to your account (in Diagnostic mode) using the password instead of the PIN.<\/p>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To be able to log in to your account in Diagnostic startup mode, follow one of the methods below:<\/p>\n<div id=\"toc\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"#m1\">Method 1: Using the sign-in screen Command Prompt trick<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#m2\">Method 2: Enable the Password sign-in option<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<h3><a id=\"m1\"><\/a>Method 1: Using the sign-in screen Command Prompt trick<\/h3>\n<p>Using the good old utilman.exe method, you can launch admin Command Prompt in the sign-in screen and re-enable the services using msconfig.exe. Follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p>On the Windows sign-in screen, click the Power button, hold the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key, and click <strong>Restart<\/strong>. The computer will boot into the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/shift-restart-sign-in-screen.png\" alt=\"shift + restart to winre from sign-in screen\" width=\"749\" height=\"445\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Windows Recovery Environment, click Troubleshoot.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3098\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/winre-1.png\" alt=\"windows recovery options\" width=\"600\" height=\"464\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click Advanced Options.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/winre%20(2).png\" width=\"600\" height=\"391\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Click <strong>Command Prompt<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/winre%20(3).png\" width=\"600\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If BitLocker is enabled on your drive, you&#8217;ll be asked to type the recovery key.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25886\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/winre-bitlocker-prompt.png\" alt=\"windows re bcdedit osdevice\" width=\"751\" height=\"339\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the Command Prompt window, type the following command:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd\">BCDEDIT<\/pre>\n<p>Note down the drive letter for your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/edit-registry-offline-windows-re\/\">Windows installation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-29324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/osdevice-bcdedit-winre.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"730\" height=\"708\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Hint:<\/strong> In the BCDEDIT command output, look for the boot loader entries containing the fields, namely, <strong>path<\/strong> (pointing to winload.exe) or <strong>osdevice<\/strong> or <strong>systemroot<\/strong>, and make a note of the drive letter, which in this case, is <strong><code>G:\\<\/code><\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Now, you&#8217;ll see the <code>X:\\Windows\\System32<\/code> prompt in the Command Prompt window. Type the following commands to enable the admin Command Prompt on the sign-in screen.<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd notranslate\">G:\ncd\\windows\\system32\nren utilman.exe utilman.old\ncopy cmd.exe utilman.exe\nwpeutil reboot<\/pre>\n<p>(*where <strong><code>G:\\<\/code><\/strong> is the OS drive letter according to the BCDEDIT output.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75629\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/winre-rename-cmd-utilman.png\" alt=\"rename cmd.exe to utilman.exe\" width=\"750\" height=\"280\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The last command reboots the system automatically.<\/p>\n<p>When you see the sign-in screen, press <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Win<\/strong> + <strong>U<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0or click on the &#8220;Accessibility&#8221; button at the bottom right corner of the sign-in screen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75631\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sign-in-screen-accessibility.png\" alt=\"msconfig diagnostic startup - pin sign-in acessibility utilman.exe\" width=\"750\" height=\"351\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This starts the admin Command Prompt window at the sign-in screen.<\/p>\n<p>Type <strong>msconfig<\/strong> and press Enter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/sign-in-screen-cmd-utilman-msconfig.png\" alt=\"msconfig diagnostic startup - pin sign-in error\" width=\"752\" height=\"623\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Choose &#8220;Normal startup&#8221;, click OK, and <strong>restart<\/strong> Windows.<\/p>\n<p>You should be able to log in to the system by typing the PIN.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-75628\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/pin-sign-in-fixed.jpg\" alt=\"msconfig diagnostic startup - pin sign-in error resolved\" width=\"750\" height=\"523\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> After logging in, you must undo the utilman.exe hack. To do so, open <strong>admin<\/strong> Command Prompt and run:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd notranslate\">sfc \/scanfile=c:\\windows\\system32\\utilman.exe<\/pre>\n<p>(or)<\/p>\n<pre class=\"cmd notranslate\">cd \/d c:\\windows\\system32\ndel utilman.exe\nren utilman.old utilman.exe\n<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p>That&#8217;s it! You&#8217;ve fixed the PIN sign-in.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"m2\"><\/a>Method 2: Enable the Password sign-in option<\/h3>\n<p>In this method, you boot into the Windows Recovery Environment and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/edit-registry-offline-windows-re\/\">edit the registry offline<\/a> to turn off the mandatory Windows Hello\/PIN option. After doing so, you can log in using the Microsoft Account (MSA) password.<\/p>\n<p>On the Windows sign-in screen, click the Power button, hold the <strong>Shift<\/strong> key, and click <strong>Restart<\/strong>.
