{"id":290,"date":"2008-05-21T12:14:56","date_gmt":"2008-05-21T06:44:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=290"},"modified":"2022-08-27T14:20:01","modified_gmt":"2022-08-27T08:50:01","slug":"do-not-move-special-folders-to-the-root-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/do-not-move-special-folders-to-the-root-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"Fix: Accidentally Moved Videos or other Shell folders to D:\\ root"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you relocate a special folder: Music, Pictures, Videos, Downloads, or Documents to a different drive using the <b>Location<\/b> tab in the Property sheet, make sure you mention the complete target path where you want to relocate the folder.<\/p>\n<p>For example, to move the <b>Videos<\/b> folder of your user profile to the <code>D:\\<\/code> drive, type <code>D:\\Videos<\/code>, instead of just <code><b>D:\\<\/b><\/code>. This is because Windows does not automatically append the folder name. In case you don&#8217;t mention the complete path, the shell folder will be moved to the root of the drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/move-special-folder-location-from-root-2.png\" alt=\"accidentally moved special folder to the root drive\" width=\"363\" height=\"269\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Although this doesn&#8217;t affect the functionality of the shell folder, a problem occurs when you restore the folder to its default location (with files). When you use the <b>Restore Default<\/b> button in the properties sheet of the special folder and choose to automatically transfer the files, Windows tries to move all the files, folders, and sub-folders from <code>D:\\<\/code> recursively to your user profile (<code>%userprofile%<\/code>).<\/p>\n<p>And, the move files operation will abruptly fail in the middle when it tries to open and enumerate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/what-is-system-volume-information-can-i-delete\/\">System Volume Information<\/a>, Config.msi, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/fix-corrupted-recycle-bin-windows-vista-7-8-10\/\">$Recycle.Bin<\/a> folder in <code>D:\\<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p>This ends up in the following errors:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\"><strong>Access is Denied\r\n\r\nThe folder can't be moved here.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nCan't redirect a parent into a child. The specified path is invalid.<\/pre>\n<div class=\"rp\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/shell-folders-merged-music-videos-same-folder\/\">Accidentally Merged Music, Pictures, Videos or Downloads Folders<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Fix: Accidentally Moved a Shell folder to the drive&#8217;s root<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve inadvertently moved a special folder &#8212; <em>e.g., <strong>Videos<\/strong><\/em> to the <code>D:\\<\/code> drive root and want to restore back to the original location, follow one of these options:<\/p>\n<h3>Option 1: Reset Videos folder path using the Location tab<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Open This PC, right-click on the <code>Videos<\/code> folder and click Properties<\/li>\n<li>In the Location tab, click the <strong>Restore Default<\/strong> button if you want to restore the folder to the default location. To move it to a different folder &#8212; e.g., <code>D:\\Videos<\/code>, type\u00a0 <code>D:\\Videos<\/code> and click <strong>Move<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9688\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/move-special-folder-location-from-root-2.png\" alt=\"accidentally moved special folder to the root drive\" width=\"363\" height=\"269\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click OK<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Yes<\/strong> when you&#8217;re prompted to create the folder in the new (destination) path.<\/li>\n<li><strong>[**Important Step**]<\/strong> Choose <strong>No<\/strong> when you see the &#8220;<em>Do you want to move all the files from the old location&#8221;<\/em> prompt.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9690\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/move-special-folder-location-from-root-1.png\" alt=\"accidentally moved special folder to the root drive\" width=\"558\" height=\"208\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Move your video files (if any) manually from the old location <code>D:\\<\/code> to the new one.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Note **<\/strong>: If you accidentally choose &#8220;Yes&#8221; at Step 5, Windows will try to move the entire D:\\ drive contents along with folders\/subfolders to the original Videos folder. During the process, it will encounter the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\"><strong>The folder can't be moved here<\/strong>\r\n\r\nFailed to build the list of regular sub-directories under 'D:\\System Volume Information'\r\n\r\nAccess is denied.<\/pre>\n<p>-or-<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Can't redirect a parent into a child.
