This script is very useful in resolving application registration issues and removing orphaned entries from the Default Apps window.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><small><a href=\"#darf\">Skip the intro &amp; go directly to DARF.vbs download<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<h2>Default Apps Registration\/Unregistration Issues<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a case where an app entry appears twice in Default Apps.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28638\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/default-apps-registration-issue-2.png\" alt=\"DARP - Default Apps Registry Finder - Duplicate entries in Default Apps\" width=\"750\" height=\"667\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In this example, one of the Telegram entries is obsolete and pointing to an invalid file. The orphaned entry shows up in the Open With dialog with no icon or caption.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/default-apps-registration-issue-1.png\" alt=\"Default Apps Registry Finder - Obsolete entry in Open With dialog\" width=\"750\" height=\"736\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here are more examples showing deleted\/uninstalled software appearing in the Open With dialog with the raw file path and no icon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28642\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/open-with-deleted-entries-1.png\" alt=\"Default Apps Registry Finder - Obsolete entry in Open With dialog\" width=\"392\" height=\"508\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28641\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/open-with-deleted-entries-2.png\" alt=\"Default Apps Registry Finder - Obsolete entry in Open With dialog\" width=\"392\" height=\"509\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The above issues occur if the corresponding application folder has been uninstalled and its folder deleted, but the app registration registry keys remain.<\/p>\n<p>Another situation is that you may have used a web browser in portable mode. The browser would have added its registry entries pointing to the existing path. After you move the app to a different drive, update the portable app, or the version number in the folder name changes, the old registration will be non-functional, and the latest version of the program may not update its registry paths automatically.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/firefox-bookmark-new-tab-loadbookmarksintabs-default\/\">Default Apps registration<\/a> is stored in the following locations:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\RegisteredApplications\r\n\r\nHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\RegisteredApplications\r\n<\/pre>\n<p>However, the above keys also reference additional registry locations, such as the &#8220;Capabilities&#8221; key and the file class keys. <code>DARF.vbs<\/code> queries all the information for you and dumps them to a log file.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> This script does NOT modify any setting on your computer.<\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"darf\"><\/a>Use Default Apps Registry Finder (DARF.vbs)<\/h2>\n<p>The Default Apps Registry Finder (<code>DARF.vbs<\/code>) script comes to the rescue. It queries the Default Apps\/Application Registration entries from the registry and dumps the information into a log file.<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note: The DARF.vbs script is similar to my FileExtInfo tool and Leo Davidson&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/filetypediag-dump-file-association-info\/\">FileTypeDiag<\/a> utility, but the script only queries the Default Apps registration entries. You can say that this script is a subset of FileTypeDiag.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>How to Use DARF.vbs<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/winhelponline\/ae9025e58e89bb37de4fe657af005d1e\/archive\/a9d4a298d2f71833d355dd57eea6828c317c4b7f.zip\">Download<\/a> and run <code>DARF.vbs<\/code>.\u00a0Type in the application name. You may type the partial name of the app &#8212; e.g., To fetch Firefox entries, search for &#8220;<code>firefox<\/code>&#8220;.
