Also, if you open the Sounds Control Panel (<code>mmsys.cpl<\/code>) and click &#8220;Test&#8221;, the audio may not be played.<\/p>\n<p>However, you may be able to play the C:\\Windows\\Media\\*.wav files (and any other audio file format) separately using Windows Media Player or any other player.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>If none of the system sounds files play in Windows, it&#8217;s due to a missing &#8220;<code>wavemapper<\/code>&#8221; value in the following registry key:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Drivers32<\/pre>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see how to fix the issue.<\/p>\n<h2>Solution<\/h2>\n<p>To fix the system sounds issue, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Drivers32<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, create a new REG_SZ value named &#8220;<code>wavemapper<\/code>&#8221; (if it doesn&#8217;t already exist.)<\/li>\n<li>Double-click &#8220;<code>wavemapper<\/code>&#8221; and set its value data to <code><strong>msacm32.drv<\/strong><\/code><\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re using Windows 64-bit, make the above modifications in the following registry key as well:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\WOW6432Node\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Drivers32<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>REG file to automate the above setting<\/h4>\n<pre>Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00\r\n\r\n;For Windows 64-bit\r\n\r\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Drivers32]\r\n\"wavemapper\"=\"msacm32.drv\"\r\n\r\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\WOW6432Node\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Drivers32]\r\n\"wavemapper\"=\"msacm32.drv\"\r\n<\/pre>\n<pre>Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00\r\n\r\n;For Windows 32-bit\r\n\r\n[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Drivers32]\r\n\"wavemapper\"=\"msacm32.drv\"<\/pre>\n<div class=\"qt\">\nAdditional Information: If you run Microsoft&#8217;s Autoruns tool, the <code>wavemapper<\/code> entries show up in the &#8220;Codecs&#8221; tab.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/wave-mapper-autoruns.png\" alt=\"wavemapper - play system sounds fix\" width=\"700\" height=\"317\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-28593\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<p>Also, make sure that the digitally signed Microsoft Sound Mapper file &#8220;<code>msacm32.drv<\/code>&#8221; exists in <code>C:\\Windows\\System32<\/code> and <code>C:\\Windows\\SysWOW64<\/code> directories.
