The full error message is below:<!--more--><\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Error: Access to the device is denied.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27815\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/rufus-ubuntu-usb-access-denied.png\" alt=\"rufus error access is denied\" width=\"473\" height=\"686\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I received the above error when creating a Ubuntu boot disk from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-iso-direct-download-mct-useragent\/\">ISO<\/a> using Rufus. The Rufus log file showed these entries:<\/p>\n<pre>WARNING: 'Controlled Folder Access' appears to be enabled on this system\r\nYou may need to disable this feature, or add an exception, for Rufus to work...<\/pre>\n<pre>Requesting disk access...\r\nWill use 'G:' as volume mountpoint\r\nOpened \\\\.\\PhysicalDrive2 for exclusive write access\r\nAnalyzing existing boot records...\r\nDrive has a Zeroed Master Boot Record\r\nClearing MBR\/PBR\/GPT structures...\r\nErasing 128 sectors\r\nWrite error [0x00000005] Access is denied.\r\nRetrying in 5 seconds...\r\nWrite error [0x00000005] Access is denied.\r\nRetrying in 5 seconds...\r\nWrite error [0x00000005] Access is denied.\r\nRetrying in 5 seconds...\r\nWrite error [0x00000005] Access is denied.\r\nCould not reset partitions\r\nRe-mounted volume as G: after error<\/pre>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The error [0x00000005] Access is denied occurs if Microsoft Defender&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/use-controlled-folder-access-windows-10-windows-defender\/\">Controlled Folder Access<\/a> feature is enabled and it has blocked Rufus from taking excluding write access to the drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27816\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/rufus-blocked-defender.png\" alt=\"rufus error access is denied - defender controlled folder access\" width=\"575\" height=\"383\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not using Microsoft Defender, then check out the equivalent setting in the respective antivirus program.<\/p>\n<h2>Solution<\/h2>\n<p>To prevent this error from occurring, try disabling Microsoft Defender&#8217;s Controlled Folder Access feature temporarily.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively, you may try adding Rufus&#8217;s executable to the list of allowed programs. To allow an app, click &#8220;Allow an app through Controlled folder access&#8221; option in Windows Defender Security Center.
