The link resolves to <code>ms-windows-store:\/\/collection\/?CollectionId=LinuxDistros<\/code> and launches the Store app.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll see the available Linux distros in the Microsoft Store app. Pick the one you want and install it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/linux-distros-store.png\" alt=\"linux distro microsoft store\" width=\"609\" height=\"289\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On some systems, the Microsoft Store shows the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Wait a while, then try that again. Something happened on our end.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27132\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/linux-distros-ms-store-err.png\" alt=\"linux distro microsoft store error\" width=\"567\" height=\"166\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If your Windows 10 or 11 device&#8217;s Country or Region is set to &#8220;United States&#8221;, the Store app lists some distros. To see the list of available options, run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>wsl --list -o<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27128\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wsl-distro-options.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"296\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say you want to install &#8220;<code>Ubuntu<\/code>&#8221; distro. To do that, run the following command:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27127\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wsl-distro-install.png\" alt=\"Windows Subsystem for Linux has no installed distributions\" width=\"697\" height=\"100\" \/><\/p>\n<pre>wsl --install --d Ubuntu<\/pre>\n<p>The Ubuntu distribution is now installed on WSL.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wsl-error-0x80070426-service-not-started\/\">WSL Error 0x80070426 &#8211; The service has not been started<\/a><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Setting up the distro for WSL<\/h3>\n<p>This section applies regardless of any method you used to install the Linux distribution for WSL.<\/p>\n<p>If you get an error when launching Ubuntu or the Ubuntu window closes, then switch back to your Command Prompt window and type:<\/p>\n<pre>wsl<\/pre>\n<p>If it shows the same error (&#8220;Windows Subsystem for Linux has no installed distributions&#8221;,) it means that the components are missing on your computer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WSL2 Linux kernel update package for x64 machines. (<a href=\"https:\/\/aka.ms\/wsl2kernel\">Download link<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>The Windows Feature &#8220;Virtual Machine Platform&#8221; is not installed. (Run <code>OptionalFeatures.exe<\/code> to install it)<\/li>\n<li>Virtualization is turned off in BIOS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You have two options now. The first option is to satisfy the above three conditions in order to enable WSL version 2. Or downgrade WSL to 1 using the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>wsl --set-default-version 1<\/pre>\n<p><em>If you&#8217;ve installed WSL for an ad-hoc purpose (e.g., to recover or delete files from a folder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/delete-a-stubborn-file-folder-in-windows\/\">inaccessible from Windows<\/a>, etc.), then WSL 1 should be sufficient for you. See Microsoft docs article <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/wsl\/compare-versions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comparing WSL 1 and WSL 2<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Once WSL is set to version <code>1<\/code>, run the following command again:<\/p>\n<pre>wsl --install --d Ubuntu<\/pre>\n<p>As we downloaded and installed Ubuntu earlier in this article, the Ubuntu window will launch now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27126\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wsl-distro-install-2.png\" alt=\"Windows Subsystem for Linux has no installed distributions\" width=\"697\" height=\"171\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Type in your new username and password for your UNIX user account.
