{"id":27060,"date":"2022-08-12T11:03:01","date_gmt":"2022-08-12T05:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=27060"},"modified":"2022-08-12T11:10:43","modified_gmt":"2022-08-12T05:40:43","slug":"onedrivesetup-error-newer-version-onedrive-installed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/onedrivesetup-error-newer-version-onedrive-installed\/","title":{"rendered":"OneDrive Setup: &#8220;A newer version of OneDrive is installed&#8221; Error"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you try to install OneDrive using the OneDrive Setup file (<code>onedrivesetup.exe<\/code>) downloaded from Microsoft, the following error may occur:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Microsoft OneDrive Setup\r\n\r\nA newer version of OneDrive is installed\r\n\r\nYou need to uninstall it first before installing this version.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27062\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/onedrive-newer-version-1.png\" alt=\"onedrivesetup new version installed\" width=\"530\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This error may occur even though you uninstalled OneDrive via Apps and Features in the Settings app or Programs and Features in the classic Control Panel.<\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The above error occurs if the previous uninstallation of OneDrive has leftover some settings in the Windows registry. If the OneDriveSetup.exe file&#8217;s version is older than the version of OneDrive available previously on the computer, an error occurs.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, if your downloaded OneDriveSetup.exe &#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/copy-file-details-version-product-context-menu\/\">version<\/a> is <code>22.065.0412.0004<\/code> but the version already installed (and later removed) from the system was <code>22.141.0703.0002<\/code>, the error &#8220;A newer version of OneDrive is installed&#8221; occurs.<\/p>\n<p>Note that the standalone installer <code>OneDriveSetup.exe<\/code> available from the official Microsoft site may not always be the latest build.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/reset-onedrive-windows-10\/\">How to Reset OneDrive, or Uninstall and Reinstall it in Windows 10\/11<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Solution<\/h2>\n<p>To fix the error &#8220;A newer version of OneDrive is installed&#8221; during OneDrive setup, follow one of these methods:<\/p>\n<h3>Method 1: Reset the Last Installed OneDrive Version Number<\/h3>\n<p>Resetting the last installed OneDrive version number registry value fixes the OneDrive setup error in most cases.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\OneDrive<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Export the branch to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">registry (.reg) file<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In the right pane, double-click the value named &#8220;<code>Version<\/code>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Clear the existing data, and type &#8220;<code>1<\/code>&#8221; as the version number.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27061\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/onedrive-newer-version-2.png\" alt=\"onedrivesetup new version installed\" width=\"601\" height=\"286\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Run OneDriveSetup.exe now.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important:<\/strong> If you have a per-machine installation, you may need to change the version value data in this key as well:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\OneDrive<\/pre>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Using command-line<\/h4>\n<p>To accomplish this via command-line, run these commands:<\/p>\n<pre>reg export HKCU\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\OneDrive\u00a0 %USERPROFILE%\\Desktop\\OneDrive.reg<\/pre>\n<p>If the above command is successful and you have the OneDrive settings saved to the registry file on your Desktop, run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>reg add HKCU\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\OneDrive \/v \"Version\" \/d \"1\" \/t REG_SZ \/f<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Method 2: Reset OneDrive Settings in the Registry<\/h3>\n<p>Note: If you use this method, you need to reconfigure OneDrive completely.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\OneDrive<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Export the branch to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">registry (.reg) file<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click on the &#8220;OneDrive&#8221; branch and choose Rename.<\/li>\n<li>Rename it to &#8220;OneDrive.old&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li>Run OneDriveSetup.exe now.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Using command-line<\/h4>\n<p>To accomplish this via command-line, run these commands:<\/p>\n<pre>reg export HKCU\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\OneDrive\u00a0 %USERPROFILE%\\Desktop\\OneDrive.reg<\/pre>\n<p>If the above command is <strong>successful<\/strong> and you have the OneDrive settings saved to the registry file on your Desktop, run the following commands:<\/p>\n<pre>reg copy HKCU\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\OneDrive HKCU\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\OneDrive.Old \/s \/f<\/pre>\n<pre>reg delete HKCU\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\OneDrive \/f<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Method 3: Copy the latest OneDrive Setup folder from another PC<\/h3>\n<p>Another method is to copy the latest OneDrive setup folder from another Windows computer.
