On some systems, Internet Explorer may be completely missing in the Windows Features classic dialog as well as the &#8220;Manage Optional Features&#8221; modern Settings page on your Windows 10 or 11 device.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27017\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ie-missing-optional-features.png\" alt=\"internet explorer missing in optional windows features\" width=\"600\" height=\"314\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27018\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/windows-features-ie-missing.png\" alt=\"internet explorer missing in optional windows features\" width=\"415\" height=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As a result, you&#8217;re unable to install Internet Explorer on your Windows 10\/11 computer. Although officially retired by Microsoft, Internet Explorer is still needed by users who have installed legacy software (e.g., security camera app) that needs IE to work.<\/p>\n<p>Also, when this happens, none of the following DISM commands may help restore IE:<\/p>\n<pre>dism \/online \/Add-Capability \/CapabilityName:Browser.InternetExplorer~~~~0.0.11.0\r\ndism \/online \/Enable-Feature \/FeatureName:Internet-Explorer-Optional-amd64<\/pre>\n<p>The DISM commands may throw the following error(s):<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Error: 0x800f080c\r\n\r\nFeature name Internet-Explorer-Optional-amd64 is unknown.\r\nA Windows feature name was not recognized.\r\nUse the \/Get-Features option to find the name of the feature in the image and try the command again.<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"err\">Error 1168\r\n\r\nElement not found<\/pre>\n<p>As Internet Explorer is missing, attempting to load a web page in IE Mode in Microsoft Edge causes the following error:<\/p>\n<pre>Internet Explorer can't be found. You need to re-install or re-enable Internet Explorer<\/pre>\n<p>Microsoft Edge&#8217;s IE mode requires Internet Explorer to be installed.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s see how to add Internet Explorer to the Windows Features dialog and install it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Fix: Internet Explorer is Missing from Windows Features<\/h2>\n<p>The Windows 10\/11 ISO contains the package .cab file needed to activate Internet Explorer. You can use DISM to install the package.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Download the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/windows-10-iso-direct-download-mct-useragent\/\">Windows 10\/11 ISO<\/a> to your computer.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click the ISO file to mount it to a drive-letter &#8212; e.g., <code>J:\\<\/code><\/li>\n<li>In the &#8220;<code>J:\\sources\\sxs\\<\/code>&#8221; folder, you&#8217;ll find the two Internet Explorer-related CAB files (along with the .NET packages).<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27019\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/ie-cab-iso-sxs.png\" alt=\"internet explorer missing in optional windows features\" width=\"565\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>microsoft-windows-internetexplorer-optional-package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~.cab<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Copy the file path for &#8220;<code>microsoft-windows-internetexplorer-optional-package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab<\/code>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">Admin Command Prompt<\/a> window.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you&#8217;re connected to the internet, as <code>DISM<\/code> may download dependencies\/packages from the Microsoft servers if some servicing files are missing on your computer.<\/li>\n<li>First, install the parent package. To do so, type the following command and press Enter:\n<pre>dism \/online \/add-package \/packagepath:\"J:\\sources\\sxs\\microsoft-windows-internetexplorer-optional-package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~.cab\"<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27020\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/dism-install-ie-feature-cab-1.png\" alt=\"internet explorer missing in optional windows features\" width=\"699\" height=\"293\" \/><\/li>\n<li>When you&#8217;re asked to restart Windows, click &#8220;N&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>After installing the parent package, install the other package using the following command:\n<pre> dism \/online \/add-package \/packagepath:\"J:\\sources\\sxs\\Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~.cab\"<\/pre>\n<p><em><strong>Editor&#8217;s note:<\/strong> During my testing on a 21H2 computer, I didn&#8217;t have to install the second CAB file (<code>Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-Optional-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~.cab<\/code>), as Internet Explorer showed up correctly in the Windows Features dialog. But, to avoid errors in the CBS.log, also install the 2nd package.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Restart Windows.<\/li>\n<li>After restarting Windows, open Windows Features (<code>optionalfeatures.exe<\/code>). <strong>Internet Explorer should now be listed!<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Enable Internet Explorer if it&#8217;s not already enabled, and click OK.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27021\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/windows-features-ie-enabled.png\" alt=\"internet explorer missing in optional windows features\" width=\"415\" height=\"368\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> Fix DISM and .NET Framework 3.5 Errors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/dism-restorehealth-error-0x800f081f-windows-10\/\">0x800F081F<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/net-framework-3-5-error-0x800f0950-windows-10-dism\/\">0x800f0950<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/error-0x800f0954-net-framework-3-5-optional-feature-dism\/\">0x800F0954<\/a> by installing the package from the &#8220;Sources&#8221; folder in Windows ISO.<\/div>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/techcommunity.microsoft.com\/t5\/windows-it-pro-blog\/internet-explorer-11-desktop-app-retirement-faq\/ba-p\/2366549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Microsoft says<\/a> that the IE11 desktop application will be disabled through a future cumulative monthly update and will redirect to Microsoft Edge if a user tries to access it.
