{"id":26634,"date":"2022-04-29T10:36:44","date_gmt":"2022-04-29T05:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/198.58.113.91\/blog\/?p=26634"},"modified":"2023-08-09T23:10:36","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T17:40:36","slug":"pdf-preview-directory-index-file-not-found","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/pdf-preview-directory-index-file-not-found\/","title":{"rendered":"[Fix] PDF Preview Shows Directory Index or ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When you preview PDF files in File Explorer or Microsoft Outlook on your Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer, the preview pane may show the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/print-directory-contents-using-chrome-firefox\/\">directory index<\/a> of the current folder instead of previewing the PDF file&#8217;s contents.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26636\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/pdf-preview-dir-index.png\" alt=\"pdf preview shows index of or error file not found\" width=\"748\" height=\"320\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In some cases, it shows the following error:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">File not found\r\n\r\nIt may have been moved, edited, or deleted.\r\nERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26635\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/pdf-preview-file-not-found.png\" alt=\"pdf preview shows index of or error file not found\" width=\"748\" height=\"319\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The above symptoms are caused by a bug in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/enable-or-disable-thumbnail-preview-for-pdf-files\/#edge\">Microsoft Edge PDF Preview handler<\/a>. The Microsoft Edge&#8217;s PDF preview handler fails to generate the preview if the PDF file name or the folder path contains the &#8220;#&#8221; symbol &#8212; e.g., <code>phonebill#2022-04.pdf<\/code>, <code>#2022-04-phonebill.pdf<\/code><\/p>\n<p>If the # symbol is present at the beginning of the file or folder name, the Edge PDF previewer shows the INDEX OF (directory index) in the preview pane. In case the # symbol is present in the middle of the file or folder name, it throws the error &#8220;File not found&#8221; (<code>ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND<\/code>)<\/p>\n<p>This issue is also seen when previewing PDF attachments in Microsoft Outlook.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26637\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ol-pdf-preview-error.png\" alt=\"pdf preview shows index of or error file not found - outlook pdf\" width=\"800\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ol-pdf-preview-error.png 800w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/ol-pdf-preview-error-768x300.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If the path to the file or the filename itself contains the pound <code>#<\/code> symbol, Edge&#8217;s PDF previewer might disregard all the path that comes after the pound. Removing the <code>#<\/code> symbol from the file or folder name resolves this issue.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t prefer removing the <code>#<\/code> symbol in the file\/folder name, then follow the method discussed below.<\/p>\n<h2>[Fix] PDF Preview Shows Directory Index or ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the PDF preview problem without renaming the PDF files or the folder(s), you may switch to a different previewer module &#8212; e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/enable-or-disable-thumbnail-preview-for-pdf-files\/#powertoys\">Microsoft PowerToys<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/enable-or-disable-thumbnail-preview-for-pdf-files\/#adobe\">Adobe Reader<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/enable-or-disable-thumbnail-preview-for-pdf-files\/#foxit\">Foxit Reader<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/enable-or-disable-thumbnail-preview-for-pdf-files\/#sumatra\">SumatraPDF Reader<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note that you don&#8217;t have to change the PDF file association to resolve the PDF preview problem &#8212; you can continue to use your default PDF reader program.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Switch to a different previewer module<\/h3>\n<p>To switch to a different PDF previewer module quickly using command-line, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p>First, open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window.<\/p>\n<p>Run one of the commands below, depending upon which PDF viewer you&#8217;re currently using:<\/p>\n<h4>Adobe Reader DC<\/h4>\n<pre>reg add HKCR\\.pdf\\ShellEx\\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f} \/ve \/d {DC6EFB56-9CFA-464D-8880-44885D7DC193} \/f<\/pre>\n<h4>Microsoft PowerToys<\/h4>\n<pre>reg add HKCR\\.pdf\\ShellEx\\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f} \/ve \/d {A5A41CC7-02CB-41D4-8C9B-9087040D6098} \/f<\/pre>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you prefer using the Microsoft PowerToys preview handler, make sure you have the turn on the \u201cEnable PDF (.pdf) preview\u201d setting on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/enable-or-disable-thumbnail-preview-for-pdf-files\/#powertoys\">PowerToys settings<\/a> page.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Foxit Reader<\/h4>\n<pre>reg add HKCR\\.pdf\\ShellEx\\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f} \/ve \/d {1B96FAD8-1C10-416E-8027-6EFF94045F6F} \/f<\/pre>\n<h4>SumatraPDF Reader<\/h4>\n<pre>reg add HKCR\\.pdf\\ShellEx\\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f} \/ve \/d {3D3B1846-CC43-42AE-BFF9-D914083C2BA3} \/f<\/pre>\n<p>The above command(s) changes the default PDF preview handler module in the following registry location automatically:<\/p>\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\.pdf\\shellex\\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}<\/pre>\n<p>The changes are usually instant; no need to restart Windows.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Prevent Edge Updater (Setup.exe)\u00a0from Modifying the Setting<\/h3>\n<p>With &#8220;<em>Step 1&#8243;<\/em> done, there is an additional procedure you may wish to perform.<\/p>\n<p>The Microsoft Edge software update (<code>setup.exe<\/code>) process overwrites your default PDF preview handler setting (i.e., making the Edge PDF previewer the default) every now and then.\u00a0Re-running the above commands (every time Microsoft Edge updates itself) may be inconvenient to the user.<\/p>\n<p>To work around that, you have two options:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Stop Edge setup from changing the default Preview Handler via an undocumented registry value.<br \/>\n(or)<\/li>\n<li>Set the registry key permissions so that the Microsoft edge&#8217;s setup.exe process (that runs as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/run-program-as-system-localsystem-account-windows\/\">NT AUTHORITY\\SYSTEM<\/a>) can&#8217;t write to the .pdf registry key.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>Method 1: Stop Edge Setup from changing the default Preview Handler<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window.<\/li>\n<li>Run the following commands:\n<pre>reg add HKCR\\CLSID\\{3A84F9C2-6164-485C-A7D9-4B27F8AC009E} \/v EnablePreviewHandler \/t REG_DWORD \/d 0 \/f\r\n\r\nreg add HKCR\\WOW6432Node\\CLSID\\{3A84F9C2-6164-485C-A7D9-4B27F8AC009E} \/v EnablePreviewHandler \/t REG_DWORD \/d 0 \/f<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Command Prompt window<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>Editing the registry manually<\/h4>\n<p>If you wish to edit the registry manually rather than running the using command-line, then follow these steps instead:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branches one by one:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\CLSID\\{3A84F9C2-6164-485C-A7D9-4B27F8AC009E}\r\n\r\nHKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\WOW6432Node\\CLSID\\{3A84F9C2-6164-485C-A7D9-4B27F8AC009E}<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click the value named <code><strong>EnablePreviewHandler<\/strong><\/code> and set its data to <code>0<\/code>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26640\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/pdf-enablepreviewhandler-registry.png\" alt=\"enablepreviewhandler - edge pdf preview registry value\" width=\"725\" height=\"401\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<p>The above command-line\/registry setting prevents the Edge setup process from changing the default PDF preview handler module in the registry.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Despite the above registry modification, you can still use Edge&#8217;s Preview handler if you want; it&#8217;s just that the setup process won&#8217;t set it as the default every time. In other words, it does NOT disable Edge&#8217;s PDF preview handler capability.)<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>Method 2: Prevent Write access to PDF Preview Handler Registry key<\/h4>\n<p><em>(If the above procedure has resolved the issue for you, then please skip the following routine.)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Start the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>)<\/li>\n<li>Go to the following branch:\n<pre>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\.pdf\\shellex\\{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Right-click <code>{8895b1c6-b41f-4c1c-a562-0d564250836f}<\/code> and choose Permissions&#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Click Advanced.<\/li>\n<li>Click Add.<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Select a principal&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Type <code>SYSTEM<\/code> and click OK. Microsoft Edge setup.exe runs under the SYSTEM account. On the other hand, if you wish to deny write access to the registry value for ALL user accounts, type <code>EVERYONE<\/code> and click OK.<\/li>\n<li>In the Type: dropdown, select <strong>Deny<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the Applies to: dropdown, select &#8220;<strong>This key only<\/strong>&#8220;<\/li>\n<li>Click &#8220;Show advanced permissions&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Select the &#8220;Set Value&#8221; checkbox.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-26639\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/pdf-preview-registry-permission-1.png\" alt=\"pdf preview shows index of or error file not found - outlook pdf\" width=\"701\" height=\"424\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click OK.<\/li>\n<li>Click OK.<\/li>\n<li>Click Yes when you see the following prompt:\n<div class=\"err\">You are setting a deny permissions entry. Deny entries take precedence over allow entries. This means that if a user is a member of two groups, one that is allowed a permission and another that is denied the same permission, the user is denied that permission. Do you want to continue?<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That&#8217;s it. You&#8217;ve revoked the &#8220;Set value&#8221; permissions for this key (for every user on the computer).\u00a0Microsoft Edge setup\/update processes (<code>Setup.exe<\/code> or <code>MicrosoftEdgeSetup.exe<\/code>) can&#8217;t modify the registry value during software updates; they silently encounter the ACCESS DENIED error when attempting to update the PDF preview handler registry value. Regardless, the updater should be able to install\/update Edge Chromium successfully.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Other workarounds:<\/strong> If you don&#8217;t want to modify registry permissions, then you may choose to run the reg.exe command-line every time Microsoft Edge updates itself.
