Unfortunately, windows Home Editions don&#8217;t have BitLocker Drive Encryption (BDE). However, suppose you have a hard drive that&#8217;s already encrypted using BDE. In that case, Windows 11\/10 Home Edition can use the drive if the user has the 48-digit BitLocker recovery password or the recovery key.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Manage BitLocker&#8221; Control Panel applet doesn&#8217;t exist in Windows 10\/11 Home Edition. Still, you can unlock that drive and disable BDE on a device running any edition, including Windows 10 Home using the command-line tool named <code>manage-bde.exe<\/code>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25896\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/bde-decrypt-home-edition-0.png\" alt=\"remove bitlocker encryption in home edition\" width=\"675\" height=\"453\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This article tells how to unlock a BDE-encrypted drive and remove the BitLocker Drive Encryption from a drive using Windows 11\/10 Home Edition. Of course, this assumes that you have the BDE encryption key\/48-digit recovery password.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Remove BitLocker Encryption from a drive via Windows 10\/11 Home Edition<\/h2>\n<p>Let&#8217;s say you have a drive that&#8217;s encrypted with BitLocker using a Windows 10 Pro (or higher) computer. When you use it on another device, you&#8217;ll be asked to type the 48-digit recovery password to unlock the drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25895\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/bde-decrypt-home-edition-2.png\" alt=\"remove bitlocker encryption in home edition\" width=\"573\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Though Windows Home Edition doesn&#8217;t have the BDE GUI in the Control Panel, you can unlock and disable BDE using <code>manage-bde.exe<\/code> command-line. Run the command <code>manage-bde.exe \/<\/code>? for more information.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;<code>manage-bde -status<\/code>&#8221; command from an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window tells which drives are encrypted using BDE and the encryption method used.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25897\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/bde-decrypt-home-edition-1.png\" alt=\"remove bitlocker encryption in home edition\" width=\"699\" height=\"691\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Unlock the drive to access Bitlocker-encrypted data<\/h3>\n<p>To unlock the drive to allows access to BitLocker-encrypted data, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<p>From an admin Command Prompt window, type the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>manage-bde -unlock d: -RecoveryPassword [your 48-digit recovery password]\n\n(or)\n\nmanage-bde -unlock d: -rp [your 48-digit recovery password]<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25894\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/bde-decrypt-home-edition-3.png\" alt=\"remove bitlocker encryption in home edition\" width=\"654\" height=\"219\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This unlocks the volume. Your volume will show up with a lock symbol (unlocked icon) in File Explorer. At this point, you&#8217;ll be able to access the data on this drive fully.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25893\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/bde-decrypt-home-edition-unlocked.png\" alt=\"remove bitlocker encryption in home edition\" width=\"665\" height=\"235\" \/><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h3>Step 2: Turn off BitLocker Drive Encryption for a drive<\/h3>\n<p>Turning off BitLocker decrypts the volume and turns BitLocker protection off.<\/p>\n<p>To turn off BitLocker Drive Encryption on the drive  (e.g., <code>D:\\<\/code> in this case), run the following command:<\/p>\n<pre>manage-bde -off D:<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25892\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/bde-decrypt-home-edition-disabled.png\" alt=\"remove bitlocker encryption in home edition\" width=\"654\" height=\"184\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25891\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/bde-decrypt-home-edition-disabled-2.png\" alt=\"remove bitlocker encryption in home edition\" width=\"675\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p>Note that you can&#8217;t enable BDE using <code>manage-bde.exe -on<\/code> command-line argument in Home Edition.
