But, of late, you may have noticed that File History backups stopped working even though the File History settings page says the feature is turned on.<\/p>\n<p>To make it work again, users may attempt to clean up old versions of File History backups to free up the disk space. However, doing so may cause the error &#8220;The parameter is incorrect.&#8221; Here&#8217;s the full error message verbatim:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">File History Cleanup\r\n\r\nCould not clean up File History data\r\n\r\nThe parameter is incorrect.<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25850\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-parameter-incorrect.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"352\" height=\"179\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The Event Viewer may show the following entry for each failed File History Backup attempt:<\/p>\n<pre>Log Name: Microsoft-Windows-FileHistory-Engine\/BackupLog\r\nSource: Microsoft-Windows-FileHistory-Core\r\nDate: 1\/21\/2022 12:41:49 PM\r\nEvent ID: 200\r\nTask Category: None\r\nLevel: Error\r\nKeywords: \r\nUser: SYSTEM\r\nComputer: OptiPlex-9020\r\nDescription:\r\nUnable to start a backup cycle for configuration C:\\Users\\Ramesh\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\Windows\\FileHistory\\Configuration\\Config<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-error-eventlog.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"749\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, when you attempt to view or restore the previously backed up File History data, the page may show the message &#8220;<strong>No file history was found<\/strong>&#8221; and suggests that the user clicks on the &#8220;Configure File History settings link&#8221;. This may happen even though the data is still intact in the File History storage drive.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25853\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-no-history-found.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"649\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In some cases, the File History applet in the Control Panel may show &#8220;Unknown error&#8221; and &#8220;File History doesn&#8217;t recognize this drive&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25849\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-unknown-error.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"760\" height=\"385\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The File History backup failure (and the &#8220;The parameter is incorrect&#8221; error) is caused by the incorrect data in the File History configuration (<code>config1.xml<\/code> and <code>config2.xml<\/code>) file(s).<\/p>\n<p>For instance, if you rename your computer, the File History configuration would still reference the old computer name. This blocks the File History application from querying the File History configuration. Thus, the user will be unable to view or restore the previously backed up data, although the files are intact in the File History storage drive.<\/p>\n<h2>Fix File History &#8220;The parameter is incorrect&#8221; Error<\/h2>\n<p>You can fix the File History error &#8220;The parameter is incorrect&#8221; by renaming the File History configuration XML files <code>config1.xml<\/code> or <code>config2.xml<\/code>. Alternately, you can fix the contents of the XML file(s) manually (preferred option) so that your earlier File History customizations are preserved.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Update the Configuration File<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve renamed your computer earlier, edit the File History configuration files using Notepad and update the computer name accordingly in the XML file.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you have <strong>NOT<\/strong> renamed the computer and yet the &#8220;The parameter is incorrect&#8221; error occurs, follow the steps listed under the &#8220;<a href=\"#renamexml\">Still does not work<\/a>&#8221; section in this article.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Open File Explorer and navigate to this folder:\n<pre>%LocalAppData%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\FileHistory\\Configuration<\/pre>\n<p><em>(Copy the above path and paste it in Explorer address bar and hit Enter)<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Rename the file named <code>Config2.xml<\/code> to <code>Config2-old.xml<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Open the file <code>Config1.xml<\/code> using Notepad.<\/li>\n<li>Update the computer name in the XML file.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25857\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-config-xml-edit.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"700\" height=\"209\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>Around six months back, I renamed my computer to <code>OptiPlex-9020<\/code> from the previous name <code>DESKTOP-JKJ4G5Q<\/code> and that&#8217;s when File History stopped working. All I had to do was change the <code>&lt;PCName&gt;<\/code> data accordingly in the XML file.<\/em><\/div>\n<pre>&lt;?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?&gt;\r\n&lt;DataProtectionUserConfig SchemaVersion=\"1\"&gt;\r\n&lt;UserName&gt;ramesh&lt;\/UserName&gt;\r\n&lt;FriendlyName&gt;Ramesh Srinivasan&lt;\/FriendlyName&gt;\r\n&lt;PCName&gt;<strong>DESKTOP-JKJ4G5Q<\/strong>&lt;\/PCName&gt;\r\n\r\nto the following:\r\n\r\n&lt;?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\"?&gt;\r\n&lt;DataProtectionUserConfig SchemaVersion=\"1\"&gt;\r\n&lt;UserName&gt;ramesh&lt;\/UserName&gt;\r\n&lt;FriendlyName&gt;Ramesh Srinivasan&lt;\/FriendlyName&gt;\r\n&lt;PCName&gt;<strong>OptiPlex-9020<\/strong>&lt;\/PCName&gt;<\/pre>\n<div class=\"newline\"><em><strong>Hint:<\/strong> To quickly find your computer name, open a Command Prompt window and type the command &#8220;<code>hostname<\/code>&#8220;. Alternately, press the <kbd>WinKey<\/kbd> + <kbd>Pause|Break<\/kbd> key to open the <strong>About<\/strong> page in the Settings dialog directly. It shows the name (&#8220;device name&#8221;) of your computer.<\/em><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Delete the line that starts with the tag <code><strong>&lt;UserId&gt;<\/strong><\/code> line. This is important!<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-config-xml-edit-2.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"599\" height=\"192\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Save the XML file and close Notepad.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Step 2: Reconfigure File History<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Launch the Services MMC console by running <code>services.msc<\/code> via the Start\/Run dialog.<\/li>\n<li>Right-click &#8220;File History Service&#8221; and click Restart.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25858\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-service-restart.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"701\" height=\"376\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Close the Services console.<\/li>\n<li>Now, open the File History page in the Control Panel to reconfigure File History.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the &#8220;Turn on&#8221; button.<\/li>\n<li>Enable the checkbox &#8220;I want to use a previous backup on this File History drive&#8221; if you need access to the previously backed up data. Of course, this assumes that you&#8217;re still using the same drive for File History backup and got it connected already.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25856\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-reconfigure.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"681\" height=\"422\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the existing backup from the list. Don&#8217;t bother even if it shows the old computer name in that list view box below.<\/li>\n<li>Once done, click on the &#8220;Advanced settings&#8221; link in the left pane.<\/li>\n<li>Select the &#8220;Save copies of files&#8221; and &#8220;Keep saved versions&#8221; options accordingly.\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>(If you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/delete-older-versions-files-file-history\/\">clean up older versions<\/a> of File History data, you can do so. You should no longer see the &#8220;The parameter is incorrect&#8221; error now.)<\/em><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25855\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-reconfigure-2.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"597\" height=\"415\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Click on the Save changes button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"renamexml\"><\/a>Still doesn&#8217;t work?<\/h3>\n<p>If updating the computer name in the <code>Config1.xml<\/code> manually doesn&#8217;t work, then follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Rename the files <code>config1.xml<\/code> and <code>config2.xml<\/code>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25862\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/rename-file-history-xml.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"614\" height=\"209\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Restart File History Service via the Services MMC.\n<div class=\"newline\"><em>Now, File History will regenerate fresh copies of <code>Config1.xml<\/code> and <code>Config2.xml<\/code> (which is a replica of <code>Config1.xml<\/code>). However, your customizations, such as the &#8220;excluded folders&#8221; list, backup retention period\u00a0 (days\/months\/years) data, are lost. You&#8217;ll need to reconfigure the File History Backup options via Settings \u2192 Update &amp; Security \u2192 Backup \u2192 Backup using File History \u2192 More options.<\/em><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25859\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-backup-options.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"500\" height=\"784\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Reconfigure File History Backup Options (Include\/Exclude folders\/Backup retention) via Settings.<\/li>\n<li>If you need to change the storage device, you need to reconfigure File History via Control Panel.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The File History backup feature on your computer should be good to go!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25860\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/file-history-restore-data.png\" alt=\"file history not working - element not found error\" width=\"696\" height=\"351\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And yes, as you can see above, you should be able to view or restore your older File History backups as well.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>File History may have been working all these years correctly.
