This tool is available only on Windows 10\/11 Professional Edition and higher.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>On Windows Home Editions, you&#8217;ll see the following error when you attempt to launch the Group Policy Editor (which is non-existent on Home Editions)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25718\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/cant-find-gpedit-msc.png\" alt=\"gpedit.msc missing windows 10\/11 home edition\" width=\"605\" height=\"183\" \/><\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\"><strong>gpedit.msc<\/strong>\n\nWindows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"err\">secpol.msc\n\nWindows cannot find 'secpol.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.<\/pre>\n<p>On Windows Home Editions, you needed to use the Registry Editor (<code>regedit.exe<\/code>) to enable the policies manually. For each group policy, the equivalent registry setting is listed in the official Group Policy Settings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=103668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Reference Spreadsheet<\/a> by Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>Now, you have a third-party freeware that can be an alternative for the Local Group Policy Editor (<code>gpedit.msc<\/code>) in any edition of Windows, including Home Edition.<\/p>\n<h2>Policy Plus &#8211; An Alternative for GPEDIT.MSC<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Policy Plus<\/strong>, from Ben Nordick, is a freeware alternative to the Local Group Policy Editor. This tool is intended to make the power of Group Policy settings available to every version\/edition of Windows.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Fleex255\/PolicyPlus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Policy Plus<\/a> can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Run and work on all Windows editions, not just Pro and Enterprise<\/li>\n<li>Comply fully with licensing (i.e., transplant no components across Windows installations)<\/li>\n<li>View and edit Registry-based policies in local GPOs, per-user GPOs, individual POL files, offline Registry user hives, and the live Registry<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to policies by ID, text, or affected Registry entries<\/li>\n<li>Show additional technical information about objects (policies, categories, products)<\/li>\n<li>Provide convenient ways to share and import policy settings<\/li>\n<li>Non-Registry-based policies (i.e., items outside the Administrative Templates branch of the Group Policy Editor) currently have no priority, but they may be reconsidered later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As you can see below, Policy Plus lists out the GPOs in the same way as the Local Group Policy Editor.<\/p>\n<p>The security settings (Local Security Policy Editor) and Startup\/shutdown scripts aren&#8217;t available in this utility though.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25737\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25737\" style=\"width: 741px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25737 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/policy-plus-dashboard.png\" alt=\"gpedit.msc alternative policy plus\" width=\"751\" height=\"439\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">PolicyPlus dashboard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25721\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25721\" style=\"width: 686px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25721 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/gpedit-home-edition.png\" alt=\"install gpedit.msc windows 10\/11 home edition\" width=\"696\" height=\"504\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25721\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Screenshot of the Local Group Policy Editor.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Policy Plus, after changing a policy setting (for User or System), even though you click Apply or OK, the changes will take effect only after you click on the <strong>Save Policies<\/strong> option in the File menu.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25729\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/policy-plus-2.png\" alt=\"gpedit.msc alternative policy plus\" width=\"607\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And you&#8217;ll see a confirmation box like the one below:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25730\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/policy-plus-3.png\" alt=\"gpedit.msc alternative policy plus\" width=\"407\" height=\"185\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Editor&#8217;s note:\u00a0<\/strong>On Windows 11\/10 Home Edition, the settings took effect immediately when I tested. However, you may need to restart Windows or log off\/log back in for the changes to take effect for some policies. It&#8217;s due to reduced <code>RefreshPolicyEx<\/code> native functionality on Home Editions that have no Group Policy capabilities.\u00a0<\/em><em>Note that some policies take effect immediately. For the other policies, you may need to log off and log back in.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h3>Install GPEDIT.MSC on Home Edition? No. It does NOT work!!<\/h3>\n<p>The following method\/command-line is in circulation on many forums and websites. They claim that the commands enable the hidden Local Group Policy Editor on Windows 11\/10 Home Edition. <strong>But, it does NOT work!<\/strong> It only enables the Local Group Policy Editor interface, but none of the settings will actually be written to the Registry. It&#8217;s a complete waste of time!<\/p>\n<pre>FOR %F IN (\"%SystemRoot%\\servicing\\Packages\\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~*.mum\") DO (DISM \/Online \/NoRestart \/Add-Package:\"%F\")\n\nFOR %F IN (\"%SystemRoot%\\servicing\\Packages\\Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~*.mum\") DO (DISM \/Online \/NoRestart \/Add-Package:\"%F\")<\/pre>\n<p>The above commands register the following packages (via the Component Store) on a Windows 10 64-bit computer using the built-in DISM utility&#8217;s <code>\/Add-Package<\/code> command.<\/p>\n<pre>Microsoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-GB~10.0.19041.1387.mum\nMicrosoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.19041.1387.mum\nMicrosoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientTools-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.19041.1387.mum\nMicrosoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-GB~10.0.19041.1.mum\nMicrosoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~en-US~10.0.19041.1.mum\nMicrosoft-Windows-GroupPolicy-ClientExtensions-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~10.0.19041.572.mum<\/pre>\n<p><em>I tested the above command-line method. Although I could install GPEDIT.MSC on Windows 10\/11 Home Edition using the above commands, <strong>none<\/strong> of the policies weren&#8217;t applied (written to the Registry) successfully.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Policy Plus<\/strong> is still pre-release software, so there may be bugs. However, you can keep a tab on the PolicyPlus utility&#8217;s project page at <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/Fleex255\/PolicyPlus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">GitHub<\/a> and download the updated version of the tool as and when it&#8217;s released.<\/p>\n<p>This tool also has more cool features that the Local Group Policy Editor doesn&#8217;t have. The &#8220;Find&#8221; feature is very productive, wherein you can quickly narrow down to the policy setting you want, among 3000+ policies available. You can search by ID, Text, or by Registry.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example wherein I type in a registry value to find the relevant GPO easily, without depending on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=103668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">GPO-registry spreadsheet<\/a> every time.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25734\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/policy-plus-search.png\" alt=\"gpedit.msc alternative policy plus\" width=\"746\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It quickly resolved to the relevant GPO setting corresponding to the above registry value.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-25735\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/policy-plus-srch-results.png\" alt=\"gpedit.msc alternative policy plus\" width=\"751\" height=\"343\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another cool feature is that you can export the configuration changes made using PolicyPlus to a REG file (a.k.a. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/how-to-use-reg-files-registration-entries-windows\/\">registration entries<\/a>) and share it. This option is available under the &#8220;Share&#8221; menu. Similarly, you can import REG and POL files.<\/p>\n<p><em>Do you know of any GPEDIT.MSC alternative(s)?
