For example, the method disables the Windows 11 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/get-classic-full-context-menu-windows-11\/\">fast context menu<\/a>; you&#8217;ll see the classic context menu instead. Also, <strong>do not<\/strong> use this method for Insider Preview builds, as the method has been tested and verified to work only in version 22H2.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><a id=\"winsxsmanual\"><\/a>Option 1: Setting the Explorer shell manually<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window.<\/li>\n<li>Type the following command:\n<pre>fsutil hardlink list c:\\windows\\explorer.exe<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29368\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/explorer-hardlink-fsutil.png\" alt=\"restore ribbon 22h2 - winsxs explorer.exe find hardlink\" width=\"820\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/explorer-hardlink-fsutil.png 820w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/explorer-hardlink-fsutil-768x155.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 820px) 100vw, 820px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Copy the &#8220;WinSxS&#8221; link path to the clipboard. On <strong>*this*<\/strong> system, the hard link for explorer.exe is below. It might be different on your computer, depending upon your OS build\/version.\n<pre>\\Windows\\WinSxS\\amd64_microsoft-windows-explorer_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22621.608_none_b3fd0d5042b63bbd\\explorer.exe<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Next, set the explorer.exe hard link as the Shell process.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Start Regedit.exe and go to:\n<pre>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Winlogon<\/pre>\n<\/li>\n<li>Double-click &#8220;<strong>Shell<\/strong>&#8221; and set its data as follows:\n<pre>C:\\Windows\\WinSxS\\amd64_microsoft-windows-explorer_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22621.608_none_b3fd0d5042b63bbd\\explorer.exe<\/pre>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/winsxs-explorer-shell.png\" alt=\"restore ribbon 22h2 - winsxs explorer.exe method\" width=\"832\" height=\"249\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/winsxs-explorer-shell.png 832w, https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/winsxs-explorer-shell-768x230.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 832px) 100vw, 832px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Exit the Registry Editor.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">Restart Explorer<\/a> via Task Manager, or log off and log back into your account.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You should see the fully functional ribbon UI when you open a folder.<\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<p><strong>Credits:<\/strong> This method is based on the findings by <em>Freddy Stratmanshow<\/em>. Freddy found that running the following file as the first explorer.exe instance brings back the ribbon.<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\Windows\\WinSxS\\amd64_microsoft-windows-explorer_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.22621.608_none_b3fd0d5042b63bbd\\explorer.exe<\/pre>\n<p>So, I tried setting the above explorer.exe as the shell process in the registry. And it worked!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><a id=\"script\"><\/a>Option 2: Setting the Explorer Shell Using a Script<\/h4>\n<p>To automate the procedure in &#8220;Option 1&#8221;, you can download and run the VBScript file <a href=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/winhelponline\/7993e7e0c33e16afa53689e7e1f8752b\/archive\/08683fcecf40e346feee63048b0da7c57de3e026.zip\">set_winlogon_shell.vbs<\/a>. The script finds the explorer.exe hardlink and updates the <code>Winlogon\\Shell<\/code> registry value automatically.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Save the script to a folder &#8212; e.g., <code>D:\\Scripts\\set_winlogon_shell.vbs<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Double-click to run the script.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Yes<\/strong> when the script shows the following output:<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32489\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/winlogon-replace-ribbon-script.png\" alt=\"get ribbon script winlogon shell\" width=\"433\" height=\"249\" \/>\n<p>Instead, if you click <strong>No<\/strong>, you need to log off and log back in or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/exit-explorer-restart-windows-10-8\/\">restart the Explorer<\/a> shell. This is an important step.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-18386\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/warning.png\" alt=\"warning caution icon\" width=\"36\" height=\"36\" \/>If a future cumulative update changes the explorer.exe hard link, the Explorer shell may not load during login. In that case, simply launch Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc, and re-run the script.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29430\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/winsxs-explorer-shell-process.png\" alt=\"set winlogon shell - winsxs explorer.exe\" width=\"530\" height=\"310\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"qt\">\n<h4>To UNDO the changes<\/h4>\n<p>If you wish to revert to the Windows-default settings later, open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> and run this command:<\/p>\n<pre>reg add \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\CurrentVersion\\Winlogon\" \/v \"Shell\" \/d \"explorer.exe\" \/t REG_SZ \/f<\/pre>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Script Contents<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><script src=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/winhelponline\/7993e7e0c33e16afa53689e7e1f8752b.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><a id=\"registry23h2\"><\/a>Restore classic Explorer and Ribbon UI<\/a><span style=\"background-color: #ffff00;\"> Windows 11 23H2+<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>The following registry edit enables the classic Explorer with ribbon. The registry edit works in Windows 11 <strong>23H2<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/restore_explorer_ribbon_23h2.zip\">restore_explorer_ribbon_23h2.zip<\/a>.
