You may see a message that reads &#8220;There are no startup items to display&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This issue may happen even though you have many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/clean-boot-windows-autoruns\/#step2\">startup entries<\/a> in the Run registry keys.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-24235\" src=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/taskmgr-startup-no-items.png\" alt=\"task manager startup tab empty - no startup items\" width=\"488\" height=\"355\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"rp\"><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/task-manager-unknown-program-startup-entry-fix\/\">What is \u201cProgram\u201d in Task Manager Startup Tab<\/a><\/div>\n<h2>Cause<\/h2>\n<p>The Task Manager Startup tab may show the message &#8220;There are no startup items to display&#8221; if the <code>Startup<\/code> folder or the <code>Common Startup<\/code> folder has been deleted from your computer. This may be the minor side-effect of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/find-and-delete-empty-folders-windows\/\">deleting empty folders<\/a> <em>en masse<\/em> using a third-party program or script.<\/p>\n<p>When you run the &#8220;<code>shell:startup<\/code>&#8221; or &#8220;<code>shell:common startup<\/code>&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/shell-commands-to-access-the-special-folders\/\">shell command<\/a> to launch the startup folder, the following error(s) appear:<\/p>\n<pre class=\"err\">Windows cannot find 'shell:startup'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.<\/pre>\n<pre class=\"err\">Windows cannot find 'shell:common startup'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.<\/pre>\n<h2>Resolution<\/h2>\n<p>To resolve the issue, recreate the Startup folders manually.<\/p>\n<p>Open the following folder in File Explorer:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\ProgramData\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs<\/pre>\n<p>Create a subfolder named &#8220;<code>Startup<\/code>&#8221; (if it doesn&#8217;t already exist)<\/p>\n<p>Repeat the same in the following location:<\/p>\n<pre>C:\\Users\\%username%\\AppData\\Roaming\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs<\/pre>\n<h3>Using Command Prompt<\/h3>\n<p>Alternately, you can accomplish this easily using Command Prompt.<\/p>\n<p>Open an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winhelponline.com\/blog\/open-elevated-command-prompt-windows\/\">admin Command Prompt<\/a> window and run these two commands:<\/p>\n<pre>md \"%ProgramData%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Startup\"\r\n\r\nmd \"%AppData%\\Microsoft\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs\\Startup\"<\/pre>\n<p><em>(Ignore the message &#8220;already exists&#8221; if it appears for one of the above commands.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it. Task Manager should now list your startup entries correctly.<\/p>\n<h3>Still doesn&#8217;t work?<\/h3>\n<p>If that doesn&#8217;t help, you&#8217;ll need to fix the Startup folder path in the <code>User Shell Folders<\/code> registry key.
